Right now I'm posting from a computer class @ school. Don't have enough free time to consistently post so I solved the problem by posting when I should be working on some project that takes 10mins to do (5 days for everyone else in my class). Feels kinda weird posting w/ a MAC, these keyboards are way too flat.

Is anyone else posting from work or somewhere where they should be doing something else and a danger of being caught looms over them?

If you see me on here M-F between 06:15 and 15:30 Central US time, you can be pretty certain I'm at work. Probably posting at the same time I'm on some boring conference call where I don't have much to say.

Heh-heh, that was partially for scamtron, who told me to get back to work when I wasn't at work any more. Was at home doing photo stuff.

99% of my posts are from work. While I am a computer technician, so this site is pretty OK for me to visit, they would probably not be too happy to find me in the other section.

I might PM you later, I'm a Junior in highschool and I'm planning my college/career and a computer technician is one of my choices right now.

Can you just answer this though? Did you get a bachelor's degree? Did you spend 2yrs @ a local college, then 2yrs somewhere else?

They got ~25 new laptops just for ap comp sci, so I just sit behind, finish my program that's supposed to take 40 mins in 5 mins and then just chill:)

Forgive the need to be serious but, Cooltek, I think you were attempting to show off a bit by saying "posting from WORK". That is far from work d00d!
When I post from my class, I tell yall I'm at college, not work!

Ok, back to topic. Like I mentioned previously, I'm in college yet I manage an easy 3 hours of comp time each day, plus 1-2 hours from break time, PLUS the occasional 10 minutes per break per class period at school. (here the college system is 50 minutes plus 10 minutes break, for a period)
I get a good amount of time really. But it may shorten now that I have to read a book for school. Will reserve about 30-45 minutes each day.

As for Macs, which kind?
I work with Macs 3 days out of 5 per week. Uni-processor G4s, 867MHZ, 640MB RAM. They're great and very beautiful, but they CAN be easily slowed to a chug. They just don't handle multiple programs open at once, too well. OS X rocks though, just that it's like if you took Windows, with a great interface, but on each feature, you removed 80% of its options! Think of a background image feature but that is so limited, for example.
Keyboards are not bad, but they're french first here, and at first the one-button optical mouse was very annoying. You need a few weeks to get used to it, but I am pretty much comfortable now.

If you are looking in college around, I would suggest open roads. In the PC world, I think multimedia is a rising aspect. That's what I am taking. Usually technic programs take 3 years, and pre-uni are 2. I dunno if it's the same over there. I got 3 years to become experienced in integrating any multimedia element. From programming a bit of the source and graphics to sound editing and treatment, to Photoshop retouching, to 3d Animation, to final website design, it's all there. Multimedia has tons of doors.

Just keep your eyes open before entering. Too many here take Science Nature, a pre-u course, but most take it just because they are confused and don't know where to go, and not many in fact enjoy it. It's simply too much! I love my course, great people, excellent teachers that are simply too nice. They almost could kiss your ass for you! It's just the damn general courses like French that are mandatory and yet are so annoying. It's mandatory because the Quebec system makes colleges and calls them "CEGEP". It means General education. That means you need to pass French, Sports, English and Philosophy above all to pass your program and get the College Degree. Auughh. I got exempted from the english course and took German hehe.

Hmm actually you might need also the extra complementary course they offer to pass.

Well actually I'm volunteering too @ the computer lab, which requires some work. But yeah, I guess it isn't a job. Thanks for the advice, I'm just not into multimedia as much as hardware and networking though. Same with web design, I know there are way more oppurtunities for the softies but I dunno if I'd be up to that, I'd really be learning from scratch.

These are some

Come to syracuse or University of Buffalo and they don't make you take French.

Guess the only time it would come in use is if I lost the English manual to something and only had the French verison (not likely to happen); or if I could afford to visit France (very not likely).

I only ever post from work.

Technician isn't where the money is. You can make some money with networking, but most small to mid sized companies either go for someone with experience or else pay for one of their current staff members to take the courses. My brother got a networking diploma in 2000 and he said that 2/3 of the class were people who had been working for a company for a few years and the company was footing the bill in order to grow their own networking staff.

Either way a good co-op position helps.

eden to solve your 1 button optical mouse issue on the MAC's

go out and buy a 3 button wheel mouse and plug the damn thing in, it works fine. infact our university uses wheel mice on the macs, pity they don't replace the stupid 3/4 sized mac keyboards with ergonomical ones.

Go convince the school committee in charge of the 30 Macs we got in that room to replace them. I can't go against it all lol.

Yeah I like hardware too, but the question is, where?

I kept telling myself I wanna work in semiconductors and enjoy helping make a new CPU architecture. But I am lying to myself. I mean, do I really want to take chemistry course again? And just what would be my job really? How much would it take?

It's that which you should ask yourself. A systems builder or technician often won't go far in $$$. Not when lately their rep is going down with the stupid ones that find "formatting" as the only way and gain an easy buck each time.
So, again, broaden your horizon. Try Comp Sci or Comp Eng. Anything that can touch both software and hardware would help. Later, go where you want if you can get there.

Lord knows I will ever succeed with my life project.

Sorry I took so long in getting back to you...

I know that everyone is telling you what field to take, but do what you want to do. Are you looking to do something that you want to do, or something in the same field as what you want to do? Well, back to your post. I just finished with my college degree (9 years after I started) and I didn't take any computer classes. I ended up with a Management degree, after initially starting in Electrical Engineering. Then I went to a CC and basically general study, then UPS paid for me to take classes to get a management degree. Sweet.
No, computer technicians don't make a ton of money, but I am making about $46,000 per year, which is nothing to sneeze at. I also get great benefits, $5250 each year for college as well as $5250 for technical training (MCSE, A+, Cisco, etc....). So my advise is first and formost to look for something you enjoy doing, and if you want to make some money eventually, don't work for a small company where there is no room to move up. Anyway, figure out what you want to do and then take it from there. Also, as a computer technician, the college degree before you get a job is not as important as it is in some other fields. Anyway, that's my 2 cents.

Well said there man.

I also find it surprising you are paid 46 000$. That is indeed a buckload, considering in the US the taxes are way lower than here, and since hardware prices are lower there this translates into great living IMO.

That's one of the main reasons I want to go to the US to work. I want big opportunities combined with good pay. Maybe I'll find a place at Pixar...

I can post from where ever without danger looming over me. Being caught surfing around or visiting forums gets no one yelled at around here. Of course, I can't really say that danger ever looms over me. I walks quietly behind and waits for its chance to pounce.

Pixar would be phenominal!! But I have worked for my money. I am coming up on my 5 year anniversary this coming May, and I have had one promotion in that time (from technician to Senior Technician, which was basically one extra raise). Plus, when the technicians start out here, we get raises at 6, 12, 18, & 24 months before it goes yearly, and my first three or so were in the late 90's, so they were like 7%. Damn bad economy made me stuck at 3%-ish for my last few raises.

Anyway, I am happy, I have room to grow, I have a job for life as long as I am not stupid, and I am doing OK paying the bills. True, my wife can't quit work any time soon (part of that is our $200,000 house. OUCH!) but for the most part, I am happy.

That's cool to hear man!

For Pixar, it's mainly because I loved the atmosphere there, seeing it in Monsters Inc.'s DVD special features. I want to go into 3d Animation although am worried the market may not be there in a few years. I just hope my dream (not the Pixar one), which also involves 3D, doesn't crash because of lost interest. Damn school/learning time.
