How many of you guys own systems with both kinds of video cards? How about
some numbers on the differences between the two. I have AGP now but am
thinking about going SLi also.

AGP is plenty, SLI is a waste of money

I guess that depends on how you look at it. I can afford to waste a little
money as you call it. Since I am building a new rig with the x2 AMD chip,
I'd like to go with the nForce4 & I don't think AGP can be had in
combination with that chipset. I may be wrong. Besides, to me, it's not a
waste. Buying something that I want has always been an enjoyable experience
for me. ;)

Well. Since money is no problem, then why even ask for
comparison. From what I understand, unless the drivers are optimised
for the specific game you are running, the difference between a single
PCI-E, and SLI setup is none. As for AGP vs PCI-E, it all depends on
the chipset of the mainboard. The Nforce 4 PCI-E may get better
performance over a Socket 939 Nforce 3 AGP, but it's only due to the
upgraded chipset. As stated, the AGP bus has yet to be filled, and the
GPUs out right now can't fill it either. If Nforce 4 supported the
full AGP standard as well, the difference would be none between AGP,
and PCI-E on it.
I have a Biostar NF4UL-A9 board for my "in the process of
building" A64 system which has PCI-E, and a propritory XGP (aka AGP)
slot for use with AGP videocards. Not all cards work with it though,
and when compared to other Socket 939 AGP boards, it's AGP performance
is not good.

Not sure if this is an apples / oranges comparison you are making, comparing
"AGP" to "SLI". Maybe you mean like this:

(1) AGP, (2) PCI-E, or (3) PCI-E SLI ?

And if you are buildng something right now, I would leave out the AGP choice
because PCI-E is the new graphics interface standard. I don't think they
even make any 7800-line cards in AGP flavor, do they?

Finally, if you are choosing between a motherboard that will do one PCI-E
slot or two, get one that does two but only buy one video card right now.
And which one? I'd get the 7800 GTX if I were you, because it is the fastest
thing out there right now. And later you have the option of adding one more
if you need it. But at this moment, it might be a bit of a waste to have two
of them. Two reasons: (a) not many apps would take advantage of it; and (b)
bleeding edge price premium.
