Would that make a decent setup?

I'm kinda low on funds and don't want to spend $2000 on a new PC that is
just going to get killed by the PS3 and the new fangled Quad Core
processors so I want to put something together really cheap.

I can get a 6600GT for about $150 an AMD 3000+ 333mhz 512k CPu for about
$100. I've already got a motherboard and 512MB DDR333 ram and an 80GB
HDD. Other than a new PSU and a case I should be able to put together a
decent system.

My question is will the AMD 3000+ push the 6600GT fairly well?
Or should I just pick up a 5700Ultra or something for $50 less?

Yep, can't beat the $250 pricetag. :)

Depends. 4x FSAA will still push the 6600GT in modern games. For $50 less
I'd go for a Radeon 9800Pro, which is signifcantly faster than a 5700U.
Still doesn't hurt to go for a faster CPU than the 3000+ (2.17 GHz), though.
If your motherboard BIOS gives you the option to adjust multipliers, get a
mobile Athlon 2600+ (2.0 GHz). Those things easily reach 2.5 - 2.6 GHz.

Running an Athlon XP 3000+ on an FIC AN19C (VIA KT400)
mainboard with 1GB PC3200, and a 6600GT. Works great with everything I
throw at it. I don't run any higher than 1024x768 though.

Go with the 6600GT and XP3000. Running a 6600GT with XP3200 and it runs
HL2/D3/BF2/Far Cry well enough at 1024x768.

No worries. Get the 6600GT, stick the rest of the money in your pocket
and do a full system upgrade in 12 months.
