I bought an iPAQ 4155 last November and have hardly
used it. Most of the time it just sits in the cradle.
However, if I leave it in the cradle for a couple of
weeks and then take it out, it sometimes needs a reset
to turn it on. If I leave it out of the cradle, it
not only needs a reset, but it loses all its data and
I need to re-setup the whole active-sync thing with
both of my laptops. And when this happens, I have
to give the device a new name because my PC won't allow
me to use the old name that I gave the device.

A couple of questions
- Has anyone else experienced this problem?
- Is there a way to get around having to give a new name
to the device every time it loses all of it's data and
needs a new ActiveSync setup?

Not sure whats happening with the first problem, however the second is
simple. You can't leave a Pocket PC laying around more than a few days
without charging it. These things are never really off, rather they go into
a "stand by" state when you turn them off.

Since you're not charging it, all data gets wiped when the battery dies.
There's no hard drive, everything is stored in RAM (which is why these
things are never really "off" ).

This is not a problem, this is how PDAs work. They need power to hold the
memory state, where all the apps and settings are stored - this is not like
in PC where you have magnetic hard drive which doesn't need to be fed with
electricity to hold the data.

Yes. You have to go to ActiveSync -> File Menu -> Delete old Partnerships.

Is it possible to have the data stored in NVRAM that doesn't get
erased when the device is off? I'd like my contacts to at least
be stored there if that's a possibility. That way if it loses
power and then I eventually get to charge it, I won't have to
sync it before I get to see the contacts again.

Thanks for the pointer.

You mean ROM?
Yes you can do that. Open iPAQ Backup and form options menu choose PIM
Mirroring and check Enable automatic backup/restore.

But I insist that you do not forget to charge your PDA. If it stays that way
for a few days the battery might get seriously damaged.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

What about just leaving it in the charger all the time? The only time
I really need the PDA is when travelling and that hasn't happened a whole
lot of late.

It is better to leave it in the charger all the time then letting it
discharge.
