I am about to buy a new pc for gameing but do not know wether 2gig
will be much different to 1gig. If i get 2gig i will need to get a
graphics card which costs less because i am bidding on the x850xt at
the moment.

1 gig is usually enough, but occasionally there is a game that will benefit
from 2. Like Trainz.

You can Google a bit and see if any of the games you contemplate are known
to like, or even need (Tranz, with 3rd party worlds with lots of trees and
towns), 2 gigs.

Otherwise I'd go for the video card.

I have a gig right now in my pc and I dont even use my pc for gaming and
I still need even more becuase I do web developement and programming.
Also if you do alot of downloading using newsgroups or bit torrent then
you can also benifit from having more memory.

You don't need 2GB unless you want to play Battlefield 2 smoothly.

by the time vista comes out it might be the minimum amount needed to run
just the operating system without anything installed.

Has anyone else noticed that all the so called updates seem eye-candy
related. There is not one feature of vista that actually improves
productivity....and 512mb ram minimum just to run the OS, whats Microsofts
problem T_T

sorry about going off topic, just needed to say that. For gaming I
recommend looking at RAM latencies rather than sheer Megabytes of ths
stuff, but dont put the amount of ram above graphics card spec.

happy gaming! ^_^

I noticed that one of the recommended system requirements for the soon to be
released game F.E.A.R is 2GB of ram.

Cheers.

Gee those are strange conclusions. Exactly how does more than 1 Gbyte of
memory benefit dowloading from newsgroups?

That's caching and not really necessary for download unless your hard drive
is slower than your Internet connection, which is not likely.

In other words, your Internet connection is much slower than your hard drive
so it is typically very easy for you to download straight to the hard drive
without much RAM use.

The original poster did not say he is using Photoshop or doing video
editing. Just gaming. With that badass video card he is getting plus 1 gig
of RAM, he'll be doing fine for any game out there right now and hey easy to
add another gig of RAM in a few months!

RAM is going for very cheap right now BUT it sounds like the original poster
is needing the xtra money for that video card so...

So, based on all that, I recommend the original poster get one gig of RAM
now because he can always get more later.

I never said he wouldnt be fine. I am just giving him something else to
consider if he is planning to have anything running in the background.
And with my downloads im not talking about cacheing. I am talking
about queueing up so many files in news rover that it takes up that
much memory to start processing all the downloads. :)

I've had 2 gigs in my rig for about a year and the main difference
I've noticed is the reduced load times for saved games with some
titles. Far Cry being the most noticeable improvement.

To butt-in, I'm wondering what compilers etc. along with what do you have
"going on" in web pages that stresses ram so much? Even on a 2nd pc with 512
megs ram/98SE I can have both Borland's Delphi and C++ compilers going along
with Paintshop Pro, WinAmp, and whatever else along with accessing net over
dialup and it don't seem that bad. Under main pc with a gig ram/XP Pr,o
hardly seems stressed.

P.S. I also play a lot of games and I agree with "stop at a gig ram" and put
the extra money into the vid card.

Agreed. You can easily put in an extra DIMM, but you can't just go out and
buy extra GPU....unless you wanted to wasted AUD600+

Putting in a 2nd memory stick later can be problematic -- if it doesn't
totally match the first and you want to run them in dual-channel.

But only if you want to run in dual-channel.

Chances are the OP already has some memory. I assume that he does.

But even if he's buying all new ram now as well, the amount of speed
performance that 2GB dual-channel will provide over just 2GB of ram (if
dual-channel is the only reason for buying 2GB right now rather than just
1GB) is not worth sacrificing the amount of cash that could go into a better
video card.

Err...I hope other people can understand what I've just said.

Yes! Probably a possible 5% speed difference.
