Trying to decide on SD cards and wondering if the iPaqs can use the
extra speed of the better cards, or is the speed advantage lost by a
slower controller (etc)??

Anyone sure that things happen quicker between cards??

Best regards,

Jim Kelly.

PS: The Kingston Elite Pro sounds good:
Kingston SD cards have: (std) (Elite Pro)
Sustained Write Speeds 1.5MB/s* or 5MB/s
Sustained Read Speed 2.0MB/s or 10MB/s
(Hence the Elite Pro need usb2-HiSpeed to improve USB
performance).

The high speed cards were designed for the camera market and have a huge
difference in the newer camera's that use the OWA standard. Lexar's web site
talks alot about this.

Because of the cost difference, I usually stick with the regular speed
cards, if you go to hi-speed, on many applications you will not see much of
a difference, except for the following:

Reading/Writing in a external card reader--Way faster.

Using very large applications like a 10 MB Pocket Streets map, large JPG and
large database files. All will be faster, depends on the card, but you can
tell the difference fast.

Doing a system back-up to your SD card. Seems to average about 25% faster.

Some people that run MP3 and other audio or video applications that had the
stalling or skipping problem, the problem goes away with the fast cards.

One thought for future use. Since your H5550 is one of the Ipaq's that will
be able to upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, been told the SE
will see a larger difference in the hi-speed cards.

So in just normal applications (Word, IE, etc..) not much difference, in
memory heavy applications, then they are for sure faster.
Hope this helps a little !

Thanks for your thoughtful reply Ted.

We do use two GPS navigation programs although with 128mb we have
been able to put all the data on the main memory, leaving the cards
for periodic backups (mostly to help when the batteries are
inevitably accidentally exhausted).

I have been pestered with an issue when using a standard speed SD
card, where the iPaq hung for 20 to 30 seconds when first used after
a delay. This is extremely annoying as I use hundreds of notes and
to incur this delay each time I wanted to add something spoilt the
experience. Removing the SD card has made the problem go away almost
completely. Funny thing is, there weren't many files on the card,
although several were huge (cabs and backups).

Glad to know that the H5550 has the innards to handle the faster
cards. I wonder how far back in the models this occurs, or is it
only the current ones?

Thanks again for you kind help, much appreciated.

Jim Kelly.
