With many discussions regarding speedometers, I decided to do a little
test of my own...
I always thought that it took considerably longer to cross the railroad
bridge in a car than in a train, so I jacked a train from the station
in Prickle Pine and activated the Freight Mission - so I could see the
"speed" of the train.
>From the first concrete support to the last, I crossed the bridge into
San Fierro in approximately 12 seconds at exactly 45mph.
I then grabbed a Bullet, put my foot the floor and crossed that same
bridge in 17 seconds!? I took the regular (auto) bridge just to the
north on the way back in approximately the same time.
That would mean that the top speed for one of the fastest cars in the
game is LESS than 45mph! Can't be, can it?
Cleve, you're into checking these things out. So if you get a chance,
I'd like to know what your results show.

The cars drive noticably slower on railway tracks I have noticed.
The 4wd cars and offroad vehicles also drive faster on the railway
track than lower faster cars.
I often travel between citys by railway (on a car) as it is the most
direct route with little or no traffic.
As a side note who was the fool who designed the motor ways in SA you
would expect the largest motorways to go directly from one city to the
other not around in circles and stoping short of the destination city.

I've noticed that as well, but it took equally as long for me to get
across the adjacent bridge. It was a clean run and the motion blur was
active at the end of it.
I would imagine the "speed" of the train is not indicative of the
actual speed at which the train is moving.

As do I. I always take the inside rail through the blind turns as well.
In the event of an oncoming train, it's much easier to cut to the
outside of a turn than to the inside.

I agree. The engineers and planners failed overall, but they did a good
job with getting from Las Venturas to Los Santos. They need a couple
more direct routes between cities. Absent that, it would be good to be
able to hail a cab and choose from a list of available destinations
(airport, train station, save point, etc.), and be able to "skip" the
trip.

I wouldn't count on any of the game-displayed distances and speeds making a
lot of sense.
The planes are especially suspect.
For example. Say the SA land mass is about 2.25 miles across, as my Packer
measurements suggest. At 200 mph, a plane would cross it in a little over
40 seconds. At 500 mph for a jet, slightly over 16 seconds. Clearly, we're
not seeing any such speeds. It wouldn't "feel right" if they made it
accurate, and flying would become VERY difficult. We're being tricked into
thinking SA is larger than it is, in this manner, and in others. And it
works, for the most part. They did a nice job.)

Also keep in mind that for the most part CJ can outrun most vehicles so
you're right..., not alot of corolation in speeds...

Assuming you're mostly talking about San Fierro here, then it's indicative
of the real situation in San Fransisco, where the US-101 "motorway" turns
into ordinary city streets between the Golden Gate and the south of the
city, as there's no room to put a motorway through.
