I have/had a working wiresless net. I decided to change/disable my laptops internal card (broadcom g) and get one with better charactoristics like the Orinoco b/g Silver 8471-WD.
I disabled wep and mac filtering on the Ap for initial install only (still off for now). ON my laptop I disabled the built in broadcom chipset (via device mgr) and the local software firewall (ICF).
As directed by the instructions and tech support, I ran the client software first then installed the card into the slot which XP recongnized and sayed "Is working" in devce mgr.
The Orinoco card can see but cannot connect properly to the AP and other than seeing it, it can only ping it with a fixed ip. So the card on its own won't/can't get any ip except the windows one and therefore cannot see or ping the AP unless a fixed ip is used. I was on the phone for over 1 1/2 hours trying to understand the tier1 guy. We changed settings, uninstalls/reintslls all with no change. NO tier 2 tech was available (ok :< ) at the time. So now I' waiting for a email or phone call from a rier 2 tech. I'm into about 20 hours of waiting for the call or email which I received netiher as of yet.
So I removed the Orinoco card and software and enabled my broadcom chipset. XP seems to likes it but it now has the "no DHCP" issue just like the Orinono card had. It only picks up the windows ip. Yes I verified dhcp is still on and mac filter/firewall is off at the AP as well as the client PC and ip structure has not changed.
Any suggetiongs? rebuild the tcp/ip stack etc... any urls for procedures referenced woud be very helpful.

Follow on for others:
The was only one character when running a loopback ping "ping 127.0.0.1" was odd looking. Winsock was hosed so I ran the proceedure in article 811259. All is well now. :>
