AvantGo - when does it synchronize?

Returning to this topic, do AvantGo channels (such as my BBC News) get
updated every time ActiveSync is made to do a Synchronize operation
while PPC is in its cradle?

Assuming that's so, how would I set up Scheduled Tasks to get
ActiveSync to synchronize at specific times please?

Actually, your AvantGo channels can be synchronized mainly in two ways:

You can configure ActiveSync to synchronize it by going in Options --> Sync
Options and selecting AvantGo on the MobileDevice list box. It will make
that every time you synchronize your calendar, messages, tasks and etc it
will synchronize also AvantGo.

You can also synchronize from inside the Pocket PC through a wireless
internet connection or the pass through connection when connected to
ActiveSync. To do so, tap Start --> Settings --> Connections --> AvantGo
Connect --> Sync All.

Hope it helps.

Cheers,
Paulo

Thanks Paulo. Your second part, synchronizing manually from the PPC is
straightforward. But, of course, that's a manual process (and fairly
long-winded at that).

But could you clarify the first part, working from the PC. To be
honest, I can't get my mind around the way ActiveSync handles
connection and server settings - it seems extraordinarily complex to
me. (That's partly because even now, I still don't really know when
the use of the word 'connection' means connection from PPC to PC (via
cradle), connection from PC desktop to internet server, or connection
from PPC via BT etc to internet server. But that's another issue!)

If I use Options, under the Sync Options tab I see this:
http://www.terrypin.dial.pipex.com/Misc/AS1.gif
Does that look OK, for a start please? I'm puzzled by that last box.
'Enable synchronization with a server.' My AvantGo is still getting
updated each morning (presumably triggered by the soft reset that
occurs after my regular Sprite backup), yet that box is unchecked.

OK, I have AvantGo checked. But I don't follow what you mean by "It
will make that every time you synchronize your calendar, messages,
tasks and etc it will synchronize also AvantGo." Under Schedule, I
have that set to Continuous, as you see here:
http://www.terrypin.dial.pipex.com/Misc/AS2.gif
Yet AvantGo does not get updated continuously. It only seems to get
updated if I do a manual synchronize later in the day (or a soft reset
of course).

In case it's relevant, I also show a couple of my AvantGo settings:
http://www.terrypin.dial.pipex.com/Misc/AG1.gif
http://www.terrypin.dial.pipex.com/Misc/AG2.gif
On that last one, for instance, I'm also confused about the last box
'Refresh all content at next sync'. Here again, I *am* getting fresh
BBC news from AG each morning, yet I don't have that box checked.

All very puzzling!

In fact, connection means both (in my opinion). You have one connection
stabilished between your desktop PC and the PDA, and this connection is
managed by ActiveSync. Then you have another connection that is from your PC
to the internet, and that one is managed by Windows.

If you use Bluetooth, you can have an emulated serial connection to
ActiveSync that will work in the same way as if your device was in the
cradle. Otherwise, you can use it as a private area network via Bluetooth
and it works as a network connection.

What happens when you have your PDA connected via ActiveSync to your desktop
computer is that ActiveSync makes a sort of NAT from the PDA connection to
the internet connection, so, you can also access the internet from your PDA
using your desktop connection.

Yes, this setting is OK to allow you to synchronize your AvantGo channels
with your Pocket PC. The check box at the bottom is about synchronizing your
Pocket PC with an Exchange Server, so, it is not necessary to synchronize
AvantGo.

In fact, if you have continuous synchronization from your PDA to your
desktop computer it doesn't synchronize automatically AvantGo. It will
happen only when you manually select to synchronize. I don't know a way for
ActiveSync to synchronize AvantGo channels continuously, even because it
would demand your computer to be always searching for new content on the
channels.

The "Refresh all content at the next sync" option means that all the
previously saved content in your Pocket PC will be deleted and re-downloaded
at the next synchronization. If you don't select that option, your Pocket PC
will still get updated, but it will be only a refresh of the saved contents.
This is the most bandwidth saving option because you keep the contents that
were previously donwloaded but are current and download only the new
contents.

It certainly does, Paulo. Thank you for such a lucid explanation. Much
appreciated.
