Updates downloaded, install failed

Machine is an Inspiron 8600, running XPHome, SP1. My autoupdate window
shows I should install

KB885835
KB885836
and SP2

I chose to install the first three updates, and will install SP2 from
the SP2 CD I have. My autoupdate is set to inform me, and let me
download.

I let the machine download the first three, and then got the message,
Install Failed. I never tried to install them.

If I go to the Windows update site, and click on installation history,
it shows the three did indeed fail to install.

If I click on Custom Install, and let the system search for updates I
need, the green progress bar freezes after a few seconds, and I have to
CTRL ALT Del, and task manager out.

Any ideas?
