ATI Radeon 9800 128Mb - Fresh install probs

Hi .. before i start ive just upgraded from a GF4 Ti4200 64mb to this
card. I also have a P4 2.6GHz 400Mhz fsb (running at 2.85GHz), 1024Mb
of PC3200, tho i think because i have 2 512Mb DIMMs it may be clocked
down to PC2700.

I pretty much only played CounterStrike before, but got FarCry and
thought id go for a rig upgrade.

CS played (with the GF and only 512Mb of RAM) at 85fps for me (at all
times) and cut down to 42.5fps when i walked through a smoke nade. I
have my monitor set with ReForce to run at 85Hz when on a 1280*960
screen and VSync on. I believe from what i've read thats why it tops
out at 85fps, even though a friend of mine says hes getting about 200
fps with a similar setup to what i have now. Is that accurate?

Anyway i didnt have any complaints before in CS, and FarCry played
okish on low settings. I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers, put the 9800
in and installed the new software. Everything seemed to work fine.
Booted up FarCry and it ran a heck of a lot better, but with a little
slowdown now and then (i dont know what framerates im getting in FC).

Booted up CS which now tops out at 75fps .. <?>

Re-did my ReForce settings, which now shows 4 different display
options, changed each one but it still runs at 75fps. Changed
settings to performance and its looks AND plays ugly, but on high
quality settings it actually runs better, although i still get the
(exactely)50% reduction in framerate walking through smoke nades,
which this card definitely should handle. My friend still gets
100-110fps in the smoke. Im also getting ugly slowdown during Close
Quarter Combat.

Went back to FC .. pumped up the resolution and it seemed to run the
same as a lower resolution. However it struggles a bit when the
texture/environment settings are up high, and from what ppl with
lesser systems are saying i shud easily be able to handle this.

So guys .. any ideas whats gone wrong? Im sure its just a settings
prob, and i intend to see that my mobo drivers etc are up to date when
i get home. Im running Catalyst 4.4 drivers at the mo btw. If you need
to know anymore about my system just ask .. thanx for any help!

Dude, your monitor refreshrate maybe a notch down at 75 Mhz, haven't you
thought of that?

When you have Vsync on you are limited to your Monitor's refreshrate. If
you want your 200 fps like your friend have Vsync set off. Your friend's
Vsync must be off for 200 Fps or he's either lieing to you or plain stupid.

I bet you any money ATI drivers deaulted your monitor to 75 Mhz.

Personal Opinion, reguardless what other ppl say if you switch Card
manufacturers (Nvidia - ATI) I perfer reinstalling the OS. The Nvidia
drivers may of left some dlls that maybe interfering with your ATI Card's
performance.

Or if you had CS and Farcry installed when you had your Nvidia card, I
suggest you uninstall the games and re-install them for them to Detect your
ATI Card and properly install with ATI Card's settings... You may have tem
operating on Nvidia card's settings still?

I hope I helped?

Do you have a powerful enough high quality power supply unit to drive this
high power card and your other components?

I could've swore i said that i changed the refresh rates again -

...oh, i did!

Also heres something weird that has happened since then. Im getting 75fps
with my card settings all turned up .. during the game someone signs into
messenger and my screen flashes a bit as the alert pops up in the corner.
When it disappears again all the setting have turned down (AA and AF off)
and im now getting 99fps. Im baffled.

I dont particularly want 200fps, just dont want it dropping to 37.5. I dont
want to turn Vsync off either as the image tearing gets on my tits = p

Yeh, i might end up doing this, but it'd take me an entire day to reinstall
everything = s
Is there any way i can remove the dll's manually?

I believe there is a program on the Nvidia site that will uninstall 'all'
the nvidia references.
One is called Nasty File Remover
I believe this is the link:
http://www.nvplanet.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=getit&lid=102

Found on this page:
http://www.nvplanet.com/modules.php?name=Downloads&d_op=viewdownload&cid=5

I have not used it myself.

I believe that there is another one available on Rage3d.com .
