I'm having a problem syncing my Outlook Contact and Calendar data by only
certain categories.
First, you you can't select categories to sync when establishing a new
connection. Therefore you have to sync ALL of your data over before you can
even select categories to filter on. (Dumb)
Second, after I synced all my data over, then when into options and selected
only the categories I want to sync, it doesn't work. I deleted a couple
entries that were not in the category I wanted synced, and the deletion was
synced to my PDA and deleted.
Does anyone know how to get this feature to work correctly

First of all: the way Sync By Category is designed means it's a One
Way Street, where it limits what is synchronized from your desktop to
your Pocket PC, but still *everything* on your Pocket PC will be
synchronized to your desktop. The reason behind this is that this
function was originally meant to be only a space saver for your Pocket
PC, not a real "profiled" synchronization tool. For me, this meant it
never worked as I thought it would.
A workaround I once used to bypass the "sync before you can select
categories" is to move all of my appointments and contacts to other
folders in Outlook, adding only one with all possible categories
attached in both. Sync that over, and afterwards, set the sync by
category rule. Only then move all you contacts and appointments over
to the synchronized folders, where only the selected categories would
sync over to your Pocket PC. It worked for me back then, don't know if
this still goes.
If you really want a better profiled sync experience, you might want
to look into Intellisync from http://www.pumatech.com , which gives
more control over your sync settings.
