Far Cry patch 1.1 .. made lockups worse

Sure enough, when I reached the "control" episode,
the load problem with Far Cry started again .. only
now, waiting it out doesn't work. I reloaded the last
checkpoint in Control to try to get to the next episode,
and it absolutely will not load. The ATI card resets
after a timeout, but now it just never loads the next
episode. Patch 1.1 made the game more playable,
but it did not fix the load problem that starts with that
episode.

I should add, I'm running an ATI Radeon 9000 Pro 128.
It runs the game fine, and looks good up to the Control
level, but right there, every time, I was getting difficult
load of the next level ... but it would eventually load,
and after that, I would get several levels that loaded
fine. Then the problem would come back in the last
few levels. I finally finished the game .. saved Valerie :)
.... and then reinstalled Far Cry with the 1.1 patch.
The game definately played better, but the load problem
starting at Control is worse. Resets simply never work.
I found on a web site instructions for creating a file
to override the main cfg setting for "overlays" .. turning
them off. Then the next level did load after a reset.
So the problem has to do with overlays ??? Guy at
that site said right up front .. the 8500 - 9200 is not
a Directx9 compatible card. The problem is caused
by that. I haven't tried "warping" to the next level
with the new patch. I could not remember the "name"
of the next level is why :)

Got rid of my water flashing by setting the water detail to either lowest or
next to lowest.

I do still get texture bleed through when going up or down hills etc.

I hope their 1.2 patch is better.

I must say though that THIS game made my jaw drop to the floor with it's
graphics and large outdoor environment.

Reminds me of the first outdoor scene of the original Unreal game way back
when. Simply amazing.

I wonder if HL2 and Doom3 will be able to hold a candle to it.

I want one too! My 9000 is beginning to make me
ill. I finally got the level to load by creating an
override .cfg file and turning off overlays. Driving
me nuts.

Rocket launcher when you come out the door.
Just spot near the invisable ones and blast away.
That will get you up on to the big framework
thingy, and go back to the trusty assault rifle.

No swearing in this NG and you have 1 level to go after that one.

Carmack would be crazy to bring Doom3 out to compete
with Far Cry until he at least matches the "partner" gimmick
that began with CoD. I liked "saving Valerie". I especially
liked the two levels where I am with her. I realize that is
weird, but it made me work much harder to stay ahead
of a cute female and protect her. Same is true in MOHAA.
I won't play that game unless I can protect my buddies
and get through the levels with no casualties. It was even
better in CoD, but impossible to keep everybody alive.
I think the day of the "loaner" games is gone. The AI
needs to make me feel that I have company in arms.
Tonight, ZDNET reported that the US Army has found
that the guys who played their army games have a much
more positive attitude towards joining up. I certainly see
where it comes from. CoD ended with me waving a
Red Russian flag with my fellow soldiers. I was sorry to
see the game end. Strange but true.
