Need some HL2 help...

On the river section with the boat, just opened the lock (the swinging
girder), but am getting wiped out by the guys firing from the bank, in
what looks like a amoured car. There are serveral of these in this
section, I cannot seem to kill them. Is there a way, or do you just
avoid them? I get to the stage with the tanker on fire, and have to
leave the boat here (is this correct?), but then the next stage (what
looks like tanker docks) is damn near impossible on foot... (I suspect I
still need the boat).

Anyone got any tips?

Just try and speed past the armoured cars. As to the tanker on fire look for
a way over ... maybe on the right hand side?

There are a few points where you need to temporarily leave the boat, usually in
order to open gates, raise ramps, etc. There may be extended fighting at some
of these locations. You should return to the boat after you've cleared the way
forward. You may temporarily leave the boat at any other time if you wish,
though it isn't necessary, e.g. to investigate secret supply caches marked with
lambdas, to sneak forward and reconnoitre, or to take out Combine troops. You
shouldn't leave the boat permanently until the title of the next chapter appears
("Black Mesa East"). There is always a way forward with the boat until then.
As for the armoured cars, you have to avoid their missiles for now, but payback
will come later... :)

spoil-ish

Stay in the boat and drive fast, the rockets the armored car shoots are
trackers that can be fooled by last second direction changes. Some of
the paths and jumps look impossible. Use the Force, Luke.

Only get out when you must figure out how to open gates and such.
Shooting the air and land vehicles will slow their firing rate but most
of the time they don't need to be destroyed to get through........most
of the time.

It will be obvious when the boat ride is over. You will miss the boat
terribly and cry yourself to sleep. But then, you will later meet the
dune buggy!
