1. Would you recommend buying or renting a cable modem?
2. Will a router work with any cable service, or does it have to allow such capabilities? Is there something to look for when choosing?

Thanks.

In the end you save money if you buy the modem. And a router should work with any service. I have used an SMC router, it stopped working after a few years. Now I'm using an Linksys router and it works great.

Yeah, I agree...
Buy the cable modem.
It will save $$$ in the long haul.
Also, cable companies will tell
you that their services do not
support routers and will try to discourage
the use of one. This is cosmic BS and
with a little trial and error you should be able to get
it to work!!! Good Luck!

I also suggest you buy the modem instead of renting it.

Buy never rent! All cable co. are not responsible for your network (ie) if you have a problem they want to know if your cable modem is directly to a computer. If not they will not help you. This being said I am running a linksys bfsr41 and it is great I run 3 on the network at all times and have had as many as 12. Great lan party.

I also say buy it, but I have another question!! I have cable service with Comcast and use a router to connect 2 PC's to the internet. Ever since I did this, my internet connection has dropped. I play an online sim game and it seems my latency is very high. I have tried 2 kinds of routers, 2 cable modems and still cant figure out why my latency is high. My PC is new and working perfectly. I also tried bypassing the router, and saw no good change!
Any ideas would be helpful!

some cable companys do NOT give you a break on the fee if you buy your own modem in these cases take what they offer and if anything should go wrong it is their problem then and not yours

The thing about Comcast is at peak times you are gonna get a slower connection. As more people on the node add internet connections. Mine got so bad for a while I thought about going back to dial up. It took a little bit for them to catch up with demand but its working great now
