Now suddenly after 1 year of use and activation of xp sp1 and
3 months after upgrade with sp2 I´m asked to activate xp every time
when logging in. The activation works every time, but don´t remember.
Any suggestion??

Possible Resolution:

Boot into Safe Mode.

Then go to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 regwizc.dll , and hit enter.
Then go again to Start > Run and type: regsvr32 licdll.dll , and hit enter again.

Apparently, and I can't say how, the above files became unregistered.

What problems? Repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer is starting up.
If your system is one that gives you a boot order choice if you hit a
key too early, choose the hard drive and then quickly start tapping F8.
This should get you to the menu where you can choose Safe Mode.

No, you don't want to go into the BIOS. Try this instead:

Since you can boot into regular mode, go to Start>Run and type

msconfig [enter]

On the Boot.ini tab, check /SAFEBOOT. Now reboot and the computer will
automatically boot into Safe Mode. Do your work and then reverse the
msconfig steps to uncheck /SAFEBOOT.

Then I don't know what is going on in your machine. Are you sure it is
100% virus-free? Are you sure this is a legal copy of XP? That the
activation hack wasn't performed? (You don't have to tell me; I'm just
making suggestions as to the cause.)

You could have a local professional look at it, or call MS tech support.
Usually when you get the prompt to activate, there is a phone number to
call. You might do that instead of just activating over the Internet
and have MS do the troubleshooting.

Good luck,

I had a similar problem last year, activation would need doing every few
days at first, then on every bootup.

I got some help from a microsoft newsgroup like you, maybe it was Carey as
well, can't remember now.

Tried what he suggested and scanned for viruses with various online and
offline tools, at the end of the day though, I needed to format my hard
drive and reload windows.

I'll be honest and say one of my PCs had an illegal copy of windows (now
bought a genuine version!) but it was the PC with the legal version of
windows that had gone wrong, probably down to karma!

Thanks for your effort.
I have a legal OEM installation.
I will try to make a call as suggested.

Thanks

Hi,
try looking for reset* files in %windir% and %windir\system32% (usually:
c:\windows and c:\windows\system32)
Look for files similar to: reset5.bat, resetserver, resetpath,...
Rename every file except c:\windows\system32\reset.exe (Terminal Services
Reset Utility) to reset5.bat.old
Reboot your computer and try again.

Let us know.

Hi
Thanks very much, it seems that your suggestion did it.
I found these files:
reset5.exe and reset5.dll
renamed reset5.dll with *.old
also checked for virus.

the reset5.dll file had an older date then the exe file.

I'm glad it worked and you're welcome.

btw:
Didn't understand you about the date thing. You must rename both files:
reset5.dll ---> reset5.dll.old
reset5.exe ---> reset5.exe.old

I didn´t think that I should change the program file.

And as the dll file was stated as a program additionfile and it was older
than
the exe file I thought that could cause the trouble. I´m not an expert
in these matters, but I´m trying to solve all different kind of problems in
windows
that I run into by myself or in this way.
Better to learn by try and error than don´t learn anything.

It worked shanging only the dll file

But as it is a file called reset.exe and a reset5.exe file I understand
what you mean. I have now changed the reset5.exe file also.
