It could be a simple as the cd is not repaired or a repair caused a
fault all of its own. I would not have purchased a scratched disk at
any price.

You could try and call Microsoft and tell them you have a damaged cd
and that you are the owner and they will have you ship the old one
back and replace it with a working one, but I think it is to the
original licensed owner.

You need to look at the CD under a Windows machine
See if you can read the CD there
Being able to read it does not mean the CD is not faulty
Scratch repairer is only good for a Audio Cd
in my opinion

Now if you can read the CD
Download Winimage
Try to make a CD Image

If it fails then you can be almost assured the CD is bad

If it asses the Winimage test
You may still be in for problems
Just one bad file can screw up the whole installation

My honest opinion is that you a SOL

If the scratch is just into the first layer you ma be OK
If the scartch is in deep or in the data layer you are SOL

It seems that only my old pac bell will accept the cd and the new
computer i bought to replace the pac bell with will not accept the cd.
There is a tiny scratch he size of a pin tip that goes through the
film but that does not seem to affect the cd.
The skip dr cost me $40 and before i used the cleaner i could not even
read the disk, my computer would freeze. You can buy a skip dr at
almost any computer store and i gaurentee you that it will fix a
scratched cd.
anyways, i guess that the disk is hooped unless i get a computer and
wipe the drive, reinstall windows 98 and then ee if it will install.
Something might have changed the krnl386.exe program and with a clean
slate test it might just work.
I just do not have a computer suitable for the job though.

Do you realize that you could have placed another $50 towards the Skip Dr. repair kit and bought a
real in the box brand new Windows XP. Or even a better one on Ebay. Oh well.
Again if you have the original disks (cds) you can call Microsoft toll free and tell them you need
to replace them and they will ship you a new set. You pay for postage I believe. But still a good
deal if you in fact own the license to the software.

I was reading an article that said many of those repair kit do more
harm than good. Something about the solvents and polymers that are
used and the bonding solutions etc. I have also read that scratches
over so many microns are not fixed at all and the cost is not worth
the price of the chance of ruining the disks even further.

I noticed a device called "disk washer" which is supposed to condition
your cd's and make them clean and protect from scratches but I have
never obtained one. So I cannot tell you first hand if they work or
not. I use multiple backups of my cd's and diskettes. As well as
transferring the files off site.
