This would have more logically gone somewhere other than the software section, but at any rate, what's your budget?

Go to Dell buy the cheapest computer they have that has a P4 in it, when asked, upgrade to the 9800 pro. Total cost with flat panel monitor...1400.00

If an argument can't be settled in one or two paragraphs, perhaps you're anal and should just let it go...

This would be a good system
Athlon 64 3400+
I dont know what motherboard
1 gb (DDR 400?) RAM
2 74 gb Western Digiat raptors RAID 0
2 250 gb western digital speacial addition in RAID 1
DVD burner
DVD drive

Anxiously awaiting prescott....is it here yet?

Do you really need a DVD burner yet?

He just asked for the best... why not DVD burner? If you want a system on a budget, that is not the best system.

Thanks to the memory controller, you can basically buy the motherboard for features, although the via is not very good for overclocking because you can't lock it and the nf3-150 has crippled HT, which will affect games, but can overclock better. The new SIS and ALI chipsets that are just now hitting the market look to be better than the current batch, and of course the nf3-250 is supposed to be out here sometime soon.

I guess I should've read the post a little closer...doh!

if it's THE ultimate then go for opterons. As for memory try OCZ they overclock very nicely if not then corsair. For cooling try total submersion. Video card would be ATI Firegl or nVidia Quadro.
I don't even try to gues how much it would cost such a rig but I don't think I'll have enough money to buy it even if I sell my house:)

Sory for the bad english

Eh, the fire or quadro may not be the best choice. Since this is in the games section get an ATI 9800 XT. Ya, and then submersion cool it with florinert, or a constant supply of LN2. :)

Ha ha, what are you guys on?? Opterons? Quaddros?! Nah, he said gaming :)

AMD 64 3000 (its a fair bit cheaper than 3400!) CPU
ATI 9800XT 128mb gfx card
1GB DDR 400 ram
an a64 motherboard with the SiS chipset, with raid etc
2x 80gb 7200rpm 8mb cache hard drives, RAID 0 aray
CDRW (wouldnt worry bout dvd yet)
DVD drive
Wireless mouse and keyboad
XP Home / pro
Turtle Beach santa cruz sound card
5.1 speakers :)
19" TFT flat panel monitor (silver, of course)

XP2000, 256ddr 2100ram, GF4 MX440, XP Pro

Wireless controllers can be terrible for games. Sometimes there's a movement lag.

You're not going to find a 19" LCD that's good for games. CRT all the way.

I assume you meant, you wouldnt worry about DVD RW yet? Why not? DVD Writers are exponentially better than CD writers. The ability to store almost 5 gigs of data on a disc is invaluable.

i wouldnt hit dvd recorders just yet. dual layer writers are in the works for later this year. i dont think single sided single layer dvds are worth the investment. now dual sided dual layer, oh yea, i would buy one of those burners.

Nice setup, but 9800 XT, and some 74 gb WD raptors would be nice... but each raptor is 300 USD... OUCH

As for graphics card I also say Radeon 9800 or 9800P but I think a great gaming system is a P4 2.6C with some value 1GB PC4000 RAM and the whole thing overclocked to FSB 250. With RAM bandwidth so great and a good video card it's hard to say what whould be your bottleneck.

POST is way overrated, the black screen and beeps should be enough for most people.
