Hi All,

I got given HL2 (the DVD-ROM version) for Christmas and have installed
it. I registered the steam account through the installation
wizard.

When I start the game the Steam Updating window pops up
and it progresses to 27% and then bombs out with this error
message in a window:

"Steam.exe (main exception): ERROR: delete of Steam.exe failed, Win32
Error 5 "Access is denied" "

Anyone any idea what the pants is going on?

I have:

2.6GHz P4
Geforce Ti4200 GTS Pro
1GB RAM
Windows XP Pro

Best regards,
Paul

At about the 28% of an initial Steam install, Steam appears to close and
restart again. I don't know what happens at that point, but it would seems
that the Steam.exe file is deleted in the process. If Steam didn't quit in
time however, Steam.exe would still be running and hence not able to be
deleted, causing the denied error.

I could be completely wrong however. Make sure you're running with admin
privilages regardless.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I read that too. So I went into the
steam folder and renamed the SteamNew.exe to steam.exe and re-ran
HL2. The same thing happens at the same point.

I am admin on this machine already. I have also ran a
spybot scanner to check for spyware, and removed my antivirus
program. Still the same thing happens!

Best regards,
Paul

Hi,

I got this working tonight!

Before running Steam I hit ctrl-alt-delete to bring up the
task manager. I ran steam and just as the progress bar hit 27%
I manually ended the steam.exe process!

And Robert was very much my mother's brother!

Best regards,
Paul
