I am setting up a simple network comprising desktop (XP pro), laptop (XP
home) and router connected to broadband service. The desktop has been in
use for several months: the laptop and router are just being added. Whilst I
can access all files on the laptop from the desktop, I am unable to access
the desktop from the laptop - I am told that access is denied.
On the laptop, 'properties' on C drive has a sharing tab, but no security
tab. The sharing instructions are simple - just allowing me to let other
network users access my files and to change them.
On the desktop 'properties' on C drive has a security tab and sharing
instructions are complicated. I am told that sharing is default and
permissions have been set for admin purposes and sharing cannot be changed.
This seems to be the problem, but I cannot see how to get around it. I am
the sole user and do not require any administration features. I want to be
able to access all files on the system from both computers. How can I get
the same simple sharing instructions on the desktop that I have on the
laptop.
