Dear group:

My laptop is toast, but the hard drive on it is OK--thank God!!! On
it I have a couple encrypted files but I can't unlock them. Is there
any way to boot the xp OS on this disl from another computer or else
unlock the files from another computer?

I read something about having a backup decryption key. I never made
such a key not having realized the consequences, but is it possible
windows xp may have made one for me. Since the hard drive is a-ok can
I get that key maybe and get my fils?

Hi

If you could get hold of a similar computer and put the hard drive
in it and boot your original WinXP OS, that would be the easiest
way.

If that is not possible:

As you have access to the user profile folders for the user that
encrypted the files and if you remember the password for the user
that encrypted the data, you might be able to save the files.

Honestly, EFS was a great attempt and filesystem security by Microsoft, but
it's one step away from the Recycle Bin.

In the future, you may want to use a 3rd party encryption application for
easier recovery upon disk failure such as PGPdisk.

The EFSRecovery guide previously posted may help you on this one.
