I tried Doom3 tonight with Cat 4.7 and then Beta 4.9. Here's what I got
in Timedemo1:

Cat 4.7 1024x768 HQ = 20 (1st run) 21.6 (2nd run)
Cat 4.9 1024x768 HQ = 31 (1st run) 36 (2nd run)

Athlon XP 2800+
1GB DDR 266
Radeon 9700 Pro

You error'd some where during your benchmark process. Redo the tests. You
should not be seeing these performance differences. Make SURE V-Sync is off
and that you've done clean driver installs before you timedemo. Also...
slide the opengl selecter in the ATI control panel to high quality - apply
it - then slide it back to balanced and apply it. This will ensure proper
registry setup per Cat version.

So....you are saying you got a 66% increase in framerate with a simple
driver change, when ATI is claiming only a modest increase on the X800
series and none at all for the older cards?

Why not? It happened with the Detonator drivers for nVIDIA.

Absolutely no difference going from Cat 4.8 to 4.9 for me:

AMD64 3000
512 ddr pc3200 ram
ATI 9800 pro stock speeds

Cat 4.8 1024x768 MQ 2xAA, 8XAnis 2nd run 30.5
Cat 4.8 1024x768 MQ no AA or Anis 2nd run 47.8

Cat 4.9 1024x768 MQ 2xAA, 8XAnis 2nd run 30.5
Cat 4.9 1024x768 MQ no AA or Anis 2nd run 47.8

Useful for me anyhow as I have got, almost, the same setup (9700 np instead
of Pro) as the first poster and I'm going to run D3 @ 800 x 600 (when the
game eventually shows up in the UK). Will try 4.9 but will prolly wait until
they're official.

Thanks

yeah, I got maybe .3 fps improvement going to the
4.9 on my P4, 3.41 G , x800pro. I think the
4.9 are ATI's pathetic attempt to limit the damage of the
6800 series vast superiority in Doom3.

Is it just my blind eyes or did Cat4.9 betas just make
textures look somehow blurrier in general? With 4.4's
everything looked sharper when using the same
quality settings. This on Radeon 9600 Pro.

I guess there's no speed increases gainable by really
Optimizing the drivers, but decreasing the graphics
quality which I consider cheating.

Ya, someone should come up with a driver called Catalyst 4.BLACKSCREEN which
runs doom3 at over 1000 FPS!
