All -

I'm a newbie when it comes to wireless. Any help would be appreciated.

When there is more than one wireless connection available, my laptop will not stay connected to any one signal. While this seems to happen everywhere, it is especially a problem in my small office, where I want to stay connected to our wireless network ("excellent" signal strength). But at seemingly random times, the connection shifts to another available signal, often a much weaker signal.

Sony Vaio with built-in Intel Pro wireless (802.11b)
OS: WindowsXP Home
Adapter info (from Control Panel):
1394 net adapter (disabled)
Intel Pro/100 VE network connection
Intel Pro/wireless LAN 2100 3B mini PCI adapter

Regarding this last item, I get frequent "popups" saying something about Packet Scheduler miniport??

Thanks in advance for any advice

Dan

Delete all unwanted networks from your "preferred
network" list.
Click "view available networks"/"Advanced"
Select "Use Windows to configure my settings"
Click the "Advanced" button in the bottom of this window
(not the tab at the top).
Un-select "Automatically connect to non-preferred
networks"
That should keep you on your preferred network at all
times... If you lose the signal, Windows will come and
ask if you want to connect to any other available
network, but will not do it automatically.

Thanks. I tried and within a couple of minutes, I was shifted (without prompting me in any way) from my preferred network to another, with a weaker signal. I looked and only have my work network and tmobile on my "preferred" list. As I've typed this, it switched again, to yet another network not on my list.

Could it have anything to do with the "packet scheduler" business? That pops up frequently on my laptop. I don't see anything like that on my daughter's laptop, and she doesn't have this problem. If I don't need it, how can I undo it?

This is the last thing that could be the cause:
make sure that you have uncheck this key

"Use IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network"
in your wireless config for your preferred network.

Hope this helps, I'm out of options... :-)

In your Wireless Network Connection Properties, click on the Wireless Networks tab. Remove all unwanted networks from the Preferred Networks list box. Uncheck 'Use Windows to configure my wireless network configuration'.

That's what worked for me.
