I am using Dreamweaver 3.01 for my web maker program. I have recently added a Microsoft Wireless-G Kit MN-820 to my home network. I can't get Dreamweaver to download or upload files to our web site when going through the router. I connected my computer directly to the Cable Modem and Dreamweaver worked fine, so the problem is the router.

Looking in the router help files it is talking about adding more ports for different programs. Some programs that need a port to upload and another to download. Dreamweaver is using the default port of 21 and the router uses the same port number to go out through and port 20 to come back through. I really don't know what I am supposed to do to get Dreamweaver to work with the router.

I would appreciate any suggestions.

Thank you,
Sandra

Most wireless routers have a firewall feature. Look at your documentation,
turn off the firewall and then run a test. If you connect its the firewall.
Turn the firewall back on and enter the appropriate info so that the
firewall permits your connection

If you expect incoming connections to your computer, you must inform the
router about them. This is what UPnP was designed for but is not
implemented in the majority of applications. Thus, you need to instruct the
router that incoming connections on particular ports are to be forwarded to
the ports of a particular computer.

The first step is to assign a computer that will accept incoming connections
a fixed IP address. Your router probably assigns IP addresses in a given
range such as 192.168.1.x where x starts at 100 and ends at 255 (you do not
want this range to start at a too low value). Thus, in Windows, you assign
your computer an IP address below this range (such as 192.168.1.50 with a
subnet mask of 255.255.255.0), manually set the Gateway to the router's LAN
IP address (probably 192.168.1.1) and also manually configure the DNS server
addresses.

At this point, your computer should still be able to make outgoing
connections. If this does not work, something is set up incorrectly (wrong
IP, wrong Gateway or wrong DNS). To get back to where you started, turn on
DHCP-assigned (i.e. router-assigned) IP addresses in Windows.

If everything is working with the fixed IP address, the next step is to
forward particular ports to your computer. The way you do this depends on
the manufacturer of the router but is usually called "port forwarding." In
your case, you might want to forward port 20 to the fixed IP address you
chose.

If you do not know what ports to forward, check with whoever makes
Dreamweaver. The alternative is to place your fixed-IP address computer
into a DMZ (configured on the router). All ports will then be forwarded to
it as is. This is not recommended (unless necessary) since it takes away
all of the security benefits provided by the router.
