Got my Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 1, and after installation it did not
perform the way I was expected. Snow in heavy graphics in Doom 3 at 395mhz
core on my powercolor 9800pro. After removing the cooler, I noticed very bad
connection between core and cooler. And the cause of this was the plastic
airflow cover on the cooler resting on two components on my powercolor,
denying the cooler proper contact with the core. Luckely it was screwed on
with 4 small screwes, and removal was easy. After this my core runs happely
at 400mhz artifact free in doom 3.
Now, this plastic airflow cover is an aid to stear air out thru the pci
slot, and removing it will not have an big impact on airflow out of the
case, because the card itself together with the top plastic airflow cover
pushes the air out. Maybe not as good as with the cover on, but pretty
close. It's very easy to file away some plastic to give room for those two
components, and I might do that later with my minigrinder, but didn't wan't
to do that just now.
Btw. My powercolor is a poor overclocker, and getting 400mhz corespeed
artifactfree in doom 3, is like 20mhz better then my previous cooler, so I'm
happy with the cooler. Just wish Arctic Cooling tested with powercolor and
adjusted thoose few milimeters before release.
