After making all the right connections(im pretty sure) I power on and everything starts fine for about 5 or 6 seconds then shuts down. I get no display or beeps, i am very frustrated and i would greatly appreciate anyone who would take the time to give me suggestions on what to do. ive built a system before with no problems, but i dont know whats goin on wwith this one. Don't mind Grub. He is always like that...

First, a listing of your components would help. Remove everything except your RAM, CPU, Heatsink, power connection to the motherboard, and video card. Also, in case it is the PS, remove all of the power connectors from the drives and such. Then see if it boots. If so, after that, add components one at a time until you experience another boot failure. Also, don't bother trying to build it with an OS until you get it up and running. Admittedly, with no drives plugged in the PC won't do a whole lot, but turn it on, jump into the BIOS, and poke around for a few minutes and make sure that the rig keeps chugging.

Let us know if anything else is needed.

Check to see that your CPU heatsink is seated properly and that its power connector is plugged in. Could be an automatic overheat protection shut-down.

Reply to WingDing

First things you should always try:
-Take out all components except for 1 stick of memory and the video card.
-make sure the video card is fully seated....agp cards have a noticible final "bump" when they go in all the way.
-Make sure your cpu fan power lead is plugged into the socket that says "cpu1"...if it isn't the speed sensor will think your fan has failed and automatically shut down the computer.

Hope this helps

First thought would be bad contact between HS & CPU.

Sounds as if it is probally either heat or power related, realistically though its impossible to tell without you listing more specs.

I'm inclined to say PSU, but if you could list your specs then we'll be able to give you more accurate response.

Yeah, let's open a book and see just how fubar'd it is. 3-1 on, on it being the PSU

Reply to RobD

I'd go with an overheat shutdown protection. 10/1 on.

Reply to WingDing

I'm with you on the overheat protection. 5-1 he's got the cpu fan power conector in the wrong socket.

Reply to Grub

Those are rather generous odds.

Reply to WingDing

I'm taking no bets on that at those odds.

However, you can get 500/1 on it being the modem cable.

Well if you don't know them, you've never done helpdesk/support anywhere :P

They're anac's you can tell a user that basically say "you sir are a dumbass" in a nice way... PEBKAC - Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair and ID-10T is self explainatory... ID10T.

Real Solution: Machine needs a reboot (more common in w95 days)
Real Problem w/Solution: User doesn't believe rebooting the machine will correct the problem.
Real Solution to Real Problem w/Solution: "Ah yes Sir, I see you are having a pebkac error, the only known fix for that is to fully remove power from the machine thus grounding out the active matrix load balancer. Pull the power out from the wall and wait 30s, then plug the power back in and boot up, I think you'll find the problem has been resolved."

Real Solution: User needs to defrag drive since he keeps canceling when it comes up at the scheduled times.
Real Problem w/Solution: User doesn't believe defragmenting the drive will help his problem.
Real Solution for Real Problem w/Solution: "Sir, as far as my informational database here goes it appears you are having a ID-10T error... its easily corrected by a performing a redudant defragmentation power cycle process... Double click my computer, right click local disk c, click on tools, defragment now. When that process completes shutdown the computer and restart it. That will resolve the issue."

As a wiser man than I once said, "What is your username?" *CLICKITYCLICK*

btw technically he doesnt even have to have memory in it just a cpu.

12.5-1 odds its a power issue.

No, THIS is a low blow...

If your technical support skills are in line with your fantasy football skills then you would be an END-USER.

Edit: Speaking of technical support we got a call from a user yesterday and no matter how we tried the guy couldn't right click... (I transfered him to the helldesk) and left click kept pulling up menus and doubleclicking did nothing... so the helldesk tech went down to see him... he was holding his mouse in his hand with the wire going down along his wrist.... and moving the mouseball to move the cursor... the helldesk tech was about to weep... think he had a bad day.

Oh how I love moronic end-users!
Had a call a few days ago to set up an external floppy disk drive on a laptop. Few minutes later, one of the users calls me up telling me that the floppy drive doesn't work. Turns out that the drive itself was upside down, thus preventing the diskettes to enter properly. Nearly pooped myself when I flipped the drive over and saw the moronic expression on his face. Classic!!

Why do people still use floppy drives? It seems since the advent of usb flash drives, they should be useless.

Another classic call I've had (which is totally unrelated to computers) was by some lady that worked at my previous job. She asked me twice (yes twice) how to insert leads in a mechanical pencil (you know the kind that has separate leads)...I believe my IQ dropped 10 points after each explanation...

How to put freaking lead in a pencil? Gawd....

I once had an onsite Senior Systems Engineer for one of our server vendors ask me how to turn off one of their servers....that one just floored me. Showed him, but wasn't quite sure just what to say.

Would have been more entertaining to let him screw up the system trying to figure it out. :)

I think the worst I ever had was the classic cupholder (yes, I actually got that one-- and I know several other techs who have to... its more common than you think.) and a woman who's house I was at (installing her a new computer) who couldn't understand why dvd's wouldn't play in her vcr.
