I played counter strike the other night no problems. I left steam and
came back a few minutes later but couldn't get steam to work. I get the
first menu up then press play games. The play games tab comes up on the
task bar below but the menu doesn't appear. When I CAD it says both are
'not responding'. I've rebooted several times and it doesn't help.

Any ideas on how to fix this? TIA

"Can't get steam to work" is rather vague. Any error messages? What
happens when you start it?

I've had problems with Steam crashing and locking up at times. I never knew
why it was happening but to fix it I had reinstall Steam each time. Give
that a shot and let us know...

Good luck.

Have you tried to delete the clientregistry.blob in the steam folder?

What happens when you right click the play games icon on the task bar?
Anything? It sounds like steam has got locked up doing an update. Do any
of the steam icons. Have you tried "exit" option form the steam task bar
option without selecting "play games".

As another poster suggested try deleting the clientregistry thingy. too.

That worked. Thanks a bunch.

Now I'm curious as to what that was and why it kept freezing the game...

Removing the clientregistry thingy worked. Next question...why? :)

clientregistry.blob is a file that stores your login information,
including the information needed for Offline mode.

if that file somehow gets corrupted (it seems to happen quite often)
then it will cause Steam to crash, since Steam relies on that info to
authenticate you

when you delete the file and login, Steam simply retrieves the
authentication info again, and re-creates it.
