What's the deal with TFT displays outdoors? All the info on the Internet
I've read about LCD displays claims TFTs show up well in sunlight. The
reviews on the Mio 168 claim good outdoor visibility, but mine s*cks in
direct sunlight. My co-workers' TFT PDAs are also poor in sunlight. Is there
a special special sunlight setting? This is disappointing, as I was planning
to use the Mio for GPS in a convertable.

Compared to previous generations it has improved. As is typical with
marketeers though it's way over hyped.
I've seen a MVA display on a laptop that showed up quite well in the
sunlight but no PPC's use that technology yet.

Depends on what kind of LCD. The Ipaqs use a trans-reflective type and I can
read my HP Ipaq 4355 in direct sunlight just fine. Also use it in my car
with a Bluetooth GPS and even with the top off, its always perfectly
readable.

TFT Reflective and Transflectiv screens have improved over the years... and
some perform better than others...
It is not as simple as placing it under the sun. Since it is of the
reflective type, you should angle it until the elements behind the glass
reflect back some light to your eyes... They are quite viewable under direct
sunlight.
