Hello all
I need to run some old dos communications software that requires both com 1
and com 2 serial ports to be available. I have a PB4225cd with all the full
factory pack of software and docs, and all original configuration running
perfectly under win95. Just to start from a clean slate, I used the system
restore disks to return the system to an out-of-box state using the default
bios settings.
Here's the problem. The modem/soundcard defaults to com-1 in the standard
installation which is the original, factory configuration. I first looked in
the system properties, and the system shows a conflict with the com-1 serial
port in the freshly restored image. I removed the soundcard/modem from the
system both physically and in the device manager and re-booted. Com-1 is
still there with Com-2 (rear port db-9). Apparently there is another serial
port on the board even without the modem installed. Running a serial port
diagnostic program under dos reveals two 16550 high speed serial ports
on-board. Wonderful it seems, but how to access this other on-board port?
All of the PB-600 motherboard docs that I can find on the web do not show
two connectors; J24 and J23 (Jmod) that are on my board. J24 looks like a
typical 2 row x 5 pin serial port header. The J23 Jmod header, is a 2 row x
10 header (20 pin) . I have found mention on other pb motherboards that the
Jmod connector is to configure for a daughter board modem. I'm not sure if
that means a modem in one of the ISA slots or a proprietary modem connected
to the board. There are no jumpers on this header on my MB. There is an ISA
14.4 modem/soundcard as the sole card in the ISA riser that came as
standard. The rear of the case has a knock-out for another db-9 connector.
I suppose that the 2x5 header is a typical serial port header. Based on the
other MB's that have such an arrangement, I would think that the Jmod
connector has to be configured before I can use this header.
Can I configure this to provide the second serial port that I need? I don't
need the soundcard/modem in the system unless there is some way to disable
the modem on board and keep the sound, otherwise I can do without it. Any
info would be greatly appreciated, even if it's just pinouts to these
unlisted headers.
Thanks in advance,
Marie
