tif is a picture, like jpg images but allowing lossless compression meaning
file size can be large (but not as big as bitmaps).
Try image viewing or image editing programs . The previously mentioned Resco
Explorer is good, with lots of useful functions, costs $25 and doesn't open
a tif file on my machine- it asks to link to a viewer.

TIFF format for faxes is the one which can save multiple paged documents...
and since faxes are in black and white, it isn't that big really... Faxes
received on the PC and Pocket PC (KSE Truefax) use multi-page TIFF.

Sorry, I missed that.
I would hope that there's a free viewer though if the use is limited that
much.

Yes, I have the software that can do it, and use it.
I've looked at a couple of received single page faxes- KB, 40, 30, 67, 71
etc.
One 4 page fax is about 279KB.
I use supervoice, which uses proprietary formats. taking a 70k fax image in
that format,
This page is a 470kb Black and White tif file. This is a 3 column layout
full page, like newspaper print.
(total page 1728 x 2300 pixels, 1 bit per pixel [black and white]- page size
and 200 dpi- around 8.6 inches by 11.5 inches)
The thing to bear in mind is watch how much space gets taken up by saved tif
files.

tiff has traditionally been a porky format, but the fax "class 3" tiff
format is pretty lean... something that I have just learned as well.
In addition to compression, it stores only one bit (black or white) and
rivals all other formats in terms of small size even if those formats
support single bit colors. I experimented with a two color gif
(normally the smallest format) and the tiff class 3 beat it.
In addition, watching faxes go through a generic machine, it appears
that only "black" is transmitted... a guess, but a mostly blank page
"seems" to say something like "begin white... skip to position xxx,
found a black bit!"
Not sure why the four pager was large, but would assume that the pages
were pretty complex (graphics, etc?)
IrfanView (PC app) has the Tiff class 3 option, so it's a good tool to
experiment with this format.

True... but it is definitely smaller than a full color image TIFF.
Anyway, fax TIFF has been quite a standard and while it may be considered
relatively large if you receive 5 page faxes, these TIFF files can be saved
into the Storage Card. KSE Software, the makers of Truefax know this and
have added a How-to section on how you can move the Received Fax folder into
a storage card.

Beats me. There's a bit on the English webpage that says "TascalSoft
is not Commercially" (sic). Perhaps only the Japanese page accepts
registrations? (I can't read Japanese.)
