I need to reinstall Windows 98SE on a Packard
Bell Multimedia L1100 machine with an AMD K6-2
processor. Do I need to install any motherboard
chipset or USB drivers? If so, where do I download
them? Thanks.

David,
If you have the Recovery/Restore CD, the drivers should be on it, and automatically be installed. You should have gotten a second Resource CD, that had the drivers on it. For any hardware that you added after you got PC, then you will need to go to the manufacturer's website.

If you are using a retail version of Windows W98, you can check for the drivers that you need for your PC at:
http://priorityonesupport.com/home.asp

You will need to register an email address and password there. Then click on the Drivers section; work you way to the Packard Bell section. Under System Lookup enter your PC's serial #, it seems that the lookup by model# does not work anymore, it will look something like:
p4XXXXXXX9+

I would make a copy of that page, and store it on your PC. Then with that information, you will see what hardware that you had on PC, when purchased. At this time, I would also take the time, and download all the drivers that might be prevalent to your PC. There may be a time in the future that these drivers may not be available. And then copy them to a CD for future use.

David,

I am not directly familiar with the Multimedia L1100, but I have often found
drivers by identifying the chipsets on the surface of the motherboard, then
downloading drivers from the chipset manufacturers' web sites.

In the case of a system with an AMD K6-2, the overwhelming odds are that the
chipset is made by Via. Second possibility is ALi (Acer Labs Inc). See if one
or the other company names is printed on any of the large chips on the
motherboard. The Via 4-in-1 driver set has motherboard, USB, video, and IDE
drivers, maybe (I don't remember for sure) even audio... Ben Myers
