I just installed Windows 7. Infact im typing this post on it right now.

My question is, do I need to install all the drivers for my MB, video card, etc.?

When I would do a fresh install of XP, nothing worked untill I had all the drivers installed, but with Windows 7, I can surf the internet etc. without doing anything.

So, do I need to install all the drivers as before with XP?

When I look in my device manager, everythng is recognised...

Whats the deal?

Windows 7 provides basic drivers for a lot of hardware out of the box. You should still go get manufacturer provided drivers for things like your video card, sound card and NIC... but almost everything else should be ok.

Those would be a good idea as well, but it's not absolutely vital that you get them.

I believe Microsoft can update your motherboard drivers.

If you have a REALLY new motherboard you should:
1) Run some benchmarks (video and hard drive)
2) Set a RESTORE point
3) Install newer motherboard drivers

My understanding is that it can easily be left alone. As said, mainly VIDEO, AUDIO, and Peripherals like the Mouse or Keyboard or the main drivers. You should also see about BIOS updates in case there's a major fix.

Define need:

1) It works for the most part, it might have some issues but I can deal with them

2) It works as best as can possibly be.

The deal is:

a) when windows was getting ready....6 months ago, all "then current" drivers were included.

b) if you have Windows 7 drivers on your MoBo CD, then they are most likely a later version that what is in Windows. Fpr my MoBo....box built lat week .... the CD wouldn't even run in Win7

c) The latest windows drivers are on the manufacturer's web site.

The reason new drivers are released is that bugs are reported, then they are fixed, and then the new driver comes out. So if I were you, I would:

1. Go to your MoBo manufacturer's web site, select your MoBo model in the driver list and download every driver there into it's own folder. Unzip all of them.

2. Open your MoBo manual and install each driver in the order listed in the manual starting with the latest BIOS.

3. If the driver is missing off the manufacturer's site, try and see if you can load it from the CD. Some will not bee needed at all for example USB 2. Note that the set up program on the CD may not work in Win7.....then just browse the CD and look in each folder for the setup.exe file.

4. Then go to the web sites for each of the other components in your system, download and install their drivers and utilities.

5. Run windows update (Express)...let it install whatever.

6. Run Windows Update (Custom) ... write down what it lists. I have had problems in the past w/ letting Windows instll 3rd party drivers. When I write down that WU has found a new driver, I go searching the manufacturer's web site and if it's not there, it don't goin.
