Looks like the 'plonkers' are winning because it sure seems to rile
you up a little when they do it to you.

I expect you've seen it quite alot in here lately .. relating to posters
such as Toxicity/RD, DiFool, Ecole, Spoon/Sponge, Domestos/Amak, etc

plonk'ing is the process of putting a poster in your Killfile or
newsgroup filter, in order to ignore or delete their posts on your
newsreader.. Generally because the poster in question is trolling the
group, and the content of their posts is neither useful or interesting
to anyone but themselves.

It means you've been killfiled some someone can no longer see messages
posted by that particular person. It usually happens to asshats and trolls.

Hi Jan, ya mean this? :

1. plonk
from: the on-line hacker Jargon File, version 4.2.3:

plonk excl.,vt. Usenet: possibly influenced by British slang
`plonk' for cheap booze, or `plonker' for someone behaving stupidly
(latter is lit. equivalent to Yiddish `schmuck') The sound a {newbie}
makes as he falls to the bottom of a {kill file}. While it originated
in the {newsgroup} talk.bizarre, this term (usually written "*plonk*")
is now (1994) widespread on Usenet as a form of public ridicule.
St00oid is as st00pid oes. *PLONK*

I'd say that about covers it :)

Just kidding....I'm in that 83%.

It takes a lot more for me to killfile someone. Lots of nasty language
and inane rambling usually works. Like Po and Ecole, you are just
mildly annoying at times, but hell aren't we all. You do seem to have
a talent for working people up. ;-)

yeah... I frequently try to get people to cry PLONK. It can be quite
entertaining. :) Got one in this thread, as a matter of fact!

Heh, you have me pegged... :)

And unlike many, I try to irritate people by using the talents I was born
with, (being a smart-ass) instead of resorting to foul language and name-
calling.

Then why announce it. Is it the offline equivilant of "I am taking my ball
and going home".

Why not simply killfile them and be done with it.

To me PLONKING is more childish than trolling because the person who is
plonking feels the need to announce it to the group in some sort of
pre-pubescent tantrum.

The definitions already given are accurate. The word is also an acronym
meaning:

Person
Leaving
Our
Newsgroup
Killfiled

Some newsgroups use splonk instead, the S meaning Stupid.

I think it's the internet equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears,
shutting your eyes, and going "BLAH BLAH BLAH" so that the other person
knows you can't hear what they're trying to say.

No, it's the equivalent of "I'm ignoring you from now on." The hope
is that if enough people say to you "You are being so obnoxious that
I'm refusing to associate with you any more." that the offender will
change his ways. If not, we don't really care.

Yeah, it depends on your really meaning it, implementing it, and
sticking with it, but that's pretty easy, IMHO.

I see your sig links to to an ftp site with Q2 maps. Last time I was at
AGQ2 you had just made your first sp map. Are you still making them?
And what sort of system do you have now? I posted a parody of an old Byrds
song once to AGQ2 about slow computers and high pings and you said it fit
your system pretty well. Since you play HL2 you must have upgraded a whole
lot. :)

No, what's on the site is a bunch of my personal favourite maps and mods -
go into the quake2/ directory on the site and there's plenty of others
who've uploaded stuff too, AGQ2 regs new and old. :)

I haven't played HL2 yet, but I can run Doom 3 fairly well on lower-detail
settings <g> I'm on an Athlon XP 2100+ now, 512Mb DDR, 64Mb Radeon 9200. Not
exactly top-of-the-line, but it works - most of the time ;)
