XP Security Settings Self Enabled

Hi there,
something happened to my PC over the last few days that made
it act as though someone had turned up all the security settings to max.
The firewall was turned on, even though it should be off as we have a
network firewall here. 50% of web sites were unavailable. I got warnings
that I was about to be re-directed to another web site when I was debugging
..ASP applications on my local PC, and windows stopped me from viewing or
extracting files from .ZIPs. What on earth happened? Thank God for system
restore as I was able to roll back and get rid of all the problems, but what
caused it, and how do I turn these features off if it happens again? I
despise being tried like a child, I am old enough and ugly enough to make up
my own mind whether I want to open a file or not.

There is really no way for us to know what happened as you didn't say
what changed between the time things worked and the time they didn't.
Obviously there was a change since going back to a System Restore
worked for you. You can look in Event Viewer for clues (Start>Run
eventvwr.msc [enter]) or just think hard about what changed.

It almost sounds as though you picked up a browser hijacker or some
other malware, but there is no way to give you a definitive answer
based on the information you've provided.

Yeah, like malware would increase the security settings!

Actually, your original post said that you were redirected to an unknown
website and that you also could not get to "50%" of websites. This is
typical malware activity. Since you didn't provide any information to
help narrow down the troubleshooting, that is why you got the answer
you did. Without any details about your system, protection, changes to
the system, troubleshooting you had already done, all I could do was
speculate.
