Windows FW & stealth ports

I have Windows XP SP2 installed, no router, just a simple DSL modem. I
have turned Windows FW off; however, ShieldsUp show all of my ports as
"stealth". How can that be? I have no other firewall installed and
have not yet installed my antivirus program. I'm quite confused.

Could be your DSL modem has a built-in router/firewall - when I had Verizon
DSL a few months back, it had just that.

I have an old Efficient Speedstream 5260 dsl modem. There is no
reference in the manual to a built-in router/firewall. But thanks for
the suggestion.

Is your public ip in the modem (or on your computer) and is the modem doing
network address translation?

I don't believe that my public IP is in the modem; I never put it in it
(nor do I know how). I don't believe the modem is doing network
address translantion. A copy of the manual can be found here.
http://www.waymark.net/tech_support/DSL/SBC/5260.pdf. I don't know
whether my public ip is on the computer. I do have a static ip address
that I had to input into my network settings, but that was true when I
was running Windows ME on my old computer.
