....however none that i can find match what i want - integrated bluetooth and
wifi, and a compact flash slot.

the ipaq 4150 has the integrated wireless, but no CF. i guess i could use sd
for storage, but id have to compromise on cost and capacity (and speed too i
think). alternatively the 2110 has CF and BT - but no wifi. arrgh. in this
case i could buy an SD wifi adaptor - but id really much prefer integrated,
enough to get the 4150 instead.

ive seen the toshiba (e400? or maybe the e800...) that has a CF slot - but
is available with EITHER BT OR wifi - not both. cripes.

any ideas?

Dell Axim X3i has wifi and bluetooth as standard, but has SD as the external
storage......a 512GB SD card is not that expensive now.

just out of interest, why would i buy this over a 4150? the ipaq seems a
good 60 or so cheaper and is equally specced.

yeh i thought of that too - but in all honesty id prefer the 4150 and
compromise on the price and speed of SD for storage purposes - unless
someone can point me to an SD wifi card that doesnt have an aerial that
sticks out?

They all do. Otherwise, the range would be horrible. I think the
devices with built in WiFi have antennae built into the device that is
much longer than an SD card.

as an aside, does the 4150 read SD cards using 4 data lines? its not clear
by the hp website...

Spammy,
There is no compromise in using a SD card over a CF card as the SD cards
now go up to 1 GB, with 2 and 4 GB ones coming out soon. They are about 10%
more (price) then CF cards, but are also much faster then the CF cards
around. I have the 4355 and love it. If you really do have to use CF cards,
there actually is a SD to CF card adapter now.Althou this is driving me nuts
as I was just reading about it, but cannot find it, thought it was from
Sandisk.

My guess is that SD cards will keep dropping in price since they are
getting now to the point of being the standard where before it was CF cards.

Why not email Asus and ask them?
There is a UK site/distributor- http://uk.asus.com/ and the last item on the
menu bar says Contact ASUS. There's nothing to stop you mailing a few of the
sites.
Best of luck getting a response that leads to a machine, the site only shows
the 620's- but it may just need updating.

What SD card have you found to be faster than CF? My (certainly
anecdotal and unofficial) experience screams to the contrary.

I use SD for memory on my PPCs to leave the CF slots open for
peripherals (GPS, wireless, analog modems, etc.) but my CF memory
cards (all old and cheap) smoke my SDs in terms of speed.

In my old Audiovox Maestro I used AvantoGo as my "test". When storing
Avantgo content in main memory, the home page would open in less than
two seconds. On CF, about six, and SD about twelve seconds. Mazingo
(back when they were still around) would take about thirty seconds to
open on SD, but less than 15 on CF- that's when I stopped using
Mazingo- when I switched to SD for memory! (Prior to my Maestro I
used a Casio E-115, and CF was the only option.)

Now the Maestro may have had a slow slot compared to newer PPCs- I
never bothered duplicating my unscientific speed tests on my Axim,
(since I was now committed to SD for memory and figured no good could
come from "proving" I was using slower cards!) but when shuffling
digital camera files around the Axim (my el cheapo camera uses SD, my
good one, CF) the CF pictures copy to main memory and back noticibly
faster than the SD.

Doesn't CF have more parallel address lines than SD? It would seem CF
_should_ be faster by design, all else being equal.

Agreed. I just had to replace my broken Nikon Coolpix camera and
deliberately had to buy "last year's model" to get one that uses CF
storage instead of SD. (I have too many CF cards to stop using them
now!) ;-)

thanks for all the replies. ive decided to go for the 4150 and risk the
compromises that SD /may/ bring.

anyone know the cheapest place to get them in the UK? expansys have them for
a little over 250, but i hear that these are not UK models. does that
matter?

also i need a 512 meg SD card - ive seen the vanilla sandisk ones for 80. do
these use 4 data lines? is that a good price?

and finally, i also hear that HP will be releasing new PP2003 SE models
pretty soon. should i wait and see what these bring to the stage?

sorry for all the questions!

Most of the SD cards I have tested are faster then CF, especially something
like the Sandisk Ultra cards or the Ultra extreme cards. They (and others,
Lexar etc) will mention the faster access time on their web sites. I have
confirmed it many times on my 8-1 card reader respecially with large files.
Also I have heard a few people that use a Ipaq 2215 with both cards also
saying that load times are shorter.

My problem is after years of PDA's and Camera's that have CF cards is I
have a small "army" of CF cards and only one SD card.

Most of the time, the PDA cannot stay up to the higher speed cards, so
you cannot tell a difference, but you can see that difference real fast in
some of the newer 3 frame/sec, 6 MP and above camera's.
CF's have always been the standard for high end camera's (Nikon D-70, Most
Coolpix, Canon Digital Rebel lines) but from what I am hearing from the
camera people I know is that the newer camera's will be more and more SD
cards. And in looking at Vendors site, the newer cards are usually the SD's.

Some of my really old CF cards are painfully slow (like the Nikon 8 MB that
came with my Coolpix 995) and other newer ones are way faster. I have only
been using the SD for a short time, so I do not have a good history to fall
back on. Now I see that Sandisk has a new "mini-SD" card...Wish there were
not so many versions out there of various cards as I would guess that is
keeping the prices high. Seems like more new memory card versions come out
then Microsoft patches ! <g>

What CoolPix did you end up with ? I was thinking they all are CF. I am
stuck between a Nikon D-70 (fastest and "feels right" and best pictures), a
Canon EOS Digital Rebel (nice all around) or a Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2
(unreal amount of features, neat "autotrack" focusing, excellent anti-shake
mode and cool 1 MP digital viewfinder). Am leaning a little towards the
Nikon D-70 as I have a N-80 now with three Nikon lens.

If you're not in a rush... i'd wait.

There'll be an updated model of the ASUS soon with a VGA screen
(640x480), a 1.3 camera, and a better design of the handheld
altogether. I think it'll be the ASUS 730 and there's already been
pictures of it on the web.

http://www.bargainpda.com/default.asp?newsID=1958

Acer too has a similar competing model coming out soon.

thanks for the help guys - like i indicated, i chose the 4150 and hope to
pick up a 512meg sandisk ultra II for under 100. apparently that runs at
10mbit/s....

Spammy,
The 512meg sandisk ultra II will run at worst case at 10mbit/s, average
actually speeds are more like 12-15mbits/s. It is one fast card, tried it
out on USB II and Firewire card readers and it moves right along, same thing
for a 8 MP camera at 3 frames/sec. To keep up with that kind of speed on a
camera you need one fast card. Having a no questions asked Lifetime
Warranty is also rather nice !

well ok, now that we're talking about use, are these blistering speeds
useful on a 4150? i read that it has 4 data lines so i think that means it
will make use of it, but i can get a vanilla 1-2MB/S SD for 80 quid or so...
will i see 20 quids worth of improvement on the ipaq?

Hard one to give you a good answer on Spammy as the card is much faster then
the PDA. If you use Ipaq backup alot, it will cut the time down about 25%.
If you transfer files on outboard card reader with a USB 2.0 again around
20-25% improvement.

In normal use, like email, word and the basics, you will not gain that
much. Sometimes MP3's and Video's will be cleaner with no stalling. On small
JPG pictures (30K) it seems a little faster, on larger ones (over 300 KB)
they are faster, probably by a second or two. Small maps in MapPoint or
Pocket Streets you will notice that the hourglass usually does not get a
chance to show, the map just "pops up" on large Pocket Street files (1 MB)
it is much faster, maybe 5 seconds.

Its a little bit like comparing the older 266 MHz models to the 400 MHz
models when you are using larger then average files. So.....I tried my best
to answer this one, but so much depends on what you do. Also....I understand
Dollars,D.Marks, Euro's, Pd's etc...but have no idea on what 20 quids come
out to be. But for me, I think the extra 15-20% for the cards are worth it.
But then I like fast cars that can way exceed the US limit of 70 Mph also
