sorry for the long post, but I just wanted to provide enough info that
someone might be able to help me!
I'm having some problems with a wireless internet camera, and am looking for
suggestions....
SYSTEM: AMD 1.6 or 1.7GHz tower, running WIN98-se and Internet Explorer-6.
Fresh install, nothing running in background, checked for spyware and virus,
seems clean and works fine otherwise. No firewall active during tests below.
Does NOT have wireless card at this time, so only connection to router is
direct e-net cable!
ROUTER: Belkin 802.11b wireless, with 4 wired ethernet ports available. One
port connected to the tower 10/100 card. Essentially DEFAULT setup, no
encryption or firewall activated yet. (have run it as both a router and
simple access point, and no difference in following tests)
CAMERA: Toshiba IK-WB01A. Has 802.11b, as well as wired ethernet port
available. Mostly default settings, other than changes made so it will "see"
the router.
LAPTOP: Dell 650MHz, Windows98-se, with Belkin 802.11b card
Essentially, what I've found is this....
1. If I wire the camera to the router, and wire the router to the tower, I
don't have any problem getting the system to work at an acceptable frame
rate. (same is true if I use a cross-over e-net cable from the tower
directly to the camera, bypassing the router completely!)
2. If I then bring up the laptop and establish an association with the
wireless router using the Belkin card, I get the same performance on the
laptop as I do on the tower... same refresh rate, very acceptable.
3. If I disconnect the e-net cable to the camera and reboot everything (just
in case!), I can re-establish the connections using wireless from camera to
router, wired to the tower, and wireless to the laptop. However, I encounter
a lot of difficulty setting it up (long delays), and the frame rate is
terrible, very erratic, and likes to "freeze" unpredictably. This is true
whether I have the laptop running or not.
4. Finally, I set up the camera and laptop using AD-HOC mode, no router, and
found that the frame rate was again very good.
My interpretation of all this is that the camera has no problem feeding
signal out via e-net cable, to either the router or the tower. The router
has no problem feeding wireless to the laptop. The camera has no problem
feeding wireless to the laptop directly. The only real problem seems to be
in the wireless connection between the camera and the router, making me
think that they just don't "play nicely" together....
Any suggestions on what to do next???? Eventually, I'd like to have the
camera feed the router wirelessly, and connect the router to the internet
via DSL, but that's a bit down the road for now!
My other question concerns using the above system with my Ipaq2215... right
now, I can "find" the camera using the wireless card in the Ipaq, and can
even control PAN and TILT, but do not get an image I can see on the Ipaq.
I'm guessing there must be some software I need, but what? I had to download
JAVA2 to make the tower and laptop work, but I don't see anything similar
for the Ipaq. Any thoughts???

I should have mentioned that the current hardware is all within 10-20 feet
of each other, so distance shouldn't be affecting performance. Also, there
are no other 802.11 systems or other RF systems in the area, so interference
shouldn't be a factor. I think the biggest problem I'm running into is the
wireless link from the camera to the router, since everything works fine
unless I try to use this. And it doesn't seem to be the individual pieces of
hardware, since router-to-laptop works fine and so does
camera-to-laptop......
