With all the different removal tools around, i.e.microsoft, Spy-Bot etc;could
anyone please recommend one that is suitable for XP with SP2 installed.

Unfortunately utilizing just one antispyware program doesn't cover all
the various malwares floating around the net.
Here's what's running on my system :

Microsoft AntiSpyware (works well, but is still in Beta)
AdAware SE
a² -FREE
Spybot

To help prevent drive by installations, Spyware Blaster works very well:
