Installed HL1 about 2 weeks ago, playing offline OK.
Today I installed steam and created an A/C. When I tried to register HL1, got "Duplicate CD Key" error. The key printed on the back of the CD sleave is in use by someone else!!!
Emailed vugames support here in Oz ... to be honest, I'll be surprised if they answer my email and even more surprised if they do anything about it. But time will time. Maybe they will tell me to contact Valve, who will probably tell me to contact vugames. Yes, I'm very pessimistic that the illegal steam A/C will be cancelled.
If what I think will happen, does in fact happen ... what do I do next? Find a keygen for HL1?

I could be wrong, but I thought Steam would scan your harddrive for
Valve games and copy them into it's own directory at install time. You
wouldn't need to register HL1 again because your Steam account is all
you need?

You need the CDkey to register HL1 with Steam

Probably by one been using a keygen or caused by the mistake of the
publisher flooding the market with duplicate serials

Had already read both of them. However, as I understand it, the 90 days return applies only to the US and Canada. The duplicate CD key issued by Sierra/Vugames could be a issue since I *believe* I have the US version of HL1.
There's nothing about a 90 day return, etc. on the vugames.com.au. I even had to go to the Vugames US site to get the Aussie support email address !!!!

The same thing happened to me. I ended up getting a new copy of eBay
for 99p + p&p. I didn't want to buy another for the principle of it.
But for that price I didn't mind. I was very surprised when I
actually won the auction.

Somewhat surprised there was a email from Vivendi support requesting pics of the CD, CD Key & Box.
