Best Spec for HalfLife 2

Gents,

I'm about to upgrade.

I'm looking at a bare bone solution (athlon 64 3000) from these guys
- http://www.autdirect.co.uk/

I need to add to their spec at least a video card and a hard drive.

As an option, I could upgrade the on board sound to a sound card.

So, guys, what are you recommendations for awesome upgrades to get the
best out of Halflife2 (and to be honest, will also be good for most
other games...)

We seem to pay pound for dollar plus tax on everything, especially computer
gear.
(Sadly, ordering from the US or Canada would be just as costly thanks to
shipping.)

I played it on an ATI 9800XT with everything on max and it played fine.
I haven't got framerates to compare, but I was never aware of any
slowdown.

My other bits are:
AMD64 3400
Soundblaster Live! Value + 4.1 Cambridge Soundworks (about 5 years
old!)
1gb RAM
40gb ATA HDD. Seagate, forget which model.

I suspect the HDD slowed loading times a bit, but I'd been forewarned
that they were significant so I was expecting a pause. I actually
appreciated them because it gave me a chance to stretch my knuckles and
have a quick drink (from a glass on the desk, not go downstairs and
make a coffee).

Ignoring the yanks winding us up about prices, there are several options
depending on how much you want to spend. In terms of hard drive, a decent
SATA drive is nice, a newer 16mb cache model is nicer, such as the maxtor
+10 or the seagate 7200.8. Video card - it depends on the kind of detail you
want. The 6600GT will play it well for about 140 quid, the 6800GT will play
it with eveything turned as high as it will go and barely break a sweat -
much more future proof. I wouldnt spend any less than that as its not going
to last long at all. The sound isnt too much of an issue and an easy upgrade
in future.
The biggest performance hit to HL2 is memory, get as much as you can. 256 is
a complete no no, 512 is bearable, 1gb is ideal and 2gb is nice.

HeHe... 5.6 liter here... I don't complain about the price of gas, I
revel in it... The government charges a fair tax that maintains our
highways, the refineries earn a fair profit as do the retailers...
Now, why is your gas, petrol or whatever ya wanna call it so

The government, we don't pay a lot for petrol, only over 400% tax
approx current price:

petrol: 15p
fuel duty: 55p
VAT tax on the tax at 17.5%: 13p

total price: 83p per Litre (£3.13UKP - $5.91 USD per gallon)
