Ok here's the situtation. I'm making a server, Athlon XP2100, 512DDR, 40GB HD, 10/100/1000 NIC, and one 10/100 nic. I am going to be running Windows 2000 Advanced Server on it.
Now I'm going to plug in my cable modem to the 10/100 NIC, set up Internet connection sharing and make it a DHCP server, and then have the 10/100/1000 NIC plug in to the uplink port on my 8-port switch. This is because it is the only 10/100/1000 port on the switch. Is this going to work or do I need some other hardware or software to get it to work correctly?

Try it and see.

I thought the uplink port was for daisy-chaining network devices, but it's worth a try.

the uplink port is so you don't have to use a crossover cable. It can be used as a normal port with a crossover cable.

It's always the one thing you never suspected.

You would need a crossover cable if it worked.

when you see smoke is that a good sign?

Does the switch have a button to allow you to use the uplink port as a normal port?
