After upgrading my 8500DV software MMC from 8.9 to 9.02 and video
drivers to Catalyst 5.1, I now have 2 tray icons, one the old one and a
new one for the Catalyst Control Center.

Is this correct as they seem to have a lot of overlap in function. How
do I get rid of the old icon if it isn't needed any more?

Uninstall the older CC, then reinstall the newest one.
