But what does the embedded memory equal to in time?

Depends on the recording quality and format. A 64kbps MP3 is going to
give you _much_ more recording time than a uncompressed .WAV, by an
order of magnitude of about 10x. On my unit it's the difference
between about 33 minutes and 3 minutes in main memory.
Can't say exactly for you, because I don't know how much software you
have loaded and what it's memory consumption is. However, on my 256MB
SD card, I get over 8 hours recording time at 64kbps MP3 vs. 45
minutes in uncompressed WAV.

if recording time is a consideration, google for one of several third
party recording apps, some of which store in mp3 format as well as
offering additional operational parameters such as setting default or
maximum record times.
