SmartGART Hangs

Hi all,

I just installed a Sapphire Tech 9600XT. Motherboard is an Asus A7V600
with the latest bios. 512 MB RAM. Catalyst is 4.12.

In SmartGart, I choose Retest All. The PC reboots, a small SmartGart
window starts and hangs the PC hard. The PC doesn't crash, just hangs.

The next time I reboot, SmartGart doesn't start and the PC is fine.

In SmartGart Control Center, both AGP Read and AGP Write are Off. I'm
wondering if these should be off based on my system, or are they off
because SmartGart was not able to succesfully test it?

Anyone have any thoughts why SmartGart is hanging during testing?

Thanks.

To use Cat 4.1xx, you need a bunch of "other stuff"
too. I think you should move to Cat 5.1 and make
sure you go in to SmartGart and turn fast writes off
and set agp to 4x. Takes two reboots for both settings
to hold.

I installed the latest drivers from the ATI website and I have the same
problem.

1. Make sure you have the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers installed (think it goes
by the fancy name of "Hyperion" drivers now)

2. Make sure AGP is enabled in BIOS. Turn OFF "fast writes" and "sideband
addressing" if these options are available.

I read that XP SP2 does not require the 4in1 drivers. Everything,
other than RAID was identifed fine after the XP SP2 install. Can I
just install the 4in1, or will XP rollback the changes?

All BIOS settings are at the default. Fast Writes and "AGP Performance
Control" are disabled. I've tried enabling these settings one at a
time, but I always have the same problem. I don't have an option for
sideband addressing.

Thanks for you help.

In the *majority* of cases, the AGP "miniport" driver (part of the 4-in-1
package) does not need to be installed on XP systems running VIA chipsets.
Your system does not appear to be in that majority.

You can install the 4-in-1 drivers right away. XP will not roll back the
changes.

I installed the 4in1 drivers, but I'm having the same exact problem.
I'm going to run 3dmark this weekend. If my performance is OK, I'll
live with this issue. Thanks for your help.
