Hi, sorry for this long post (technical info at the end) but I have been
having
problems lately, trying to run this game called "Lord of The Rings,: Battle
for Middle Earth" ever since I had my system upgraded - a bit ironic, since
the game was what made me decide to upgrade in the first place.
It might be an issue with my Radeon card, which is why I'm posting it here.
My previous configuration was a MSI KT4 Ultra mobo with an AMD Athlon XP
2200+ and 512 Mb of RAM. My videocard is a Creative Radeon 9800 XT. The
soundcard is a Creative Soundblaster Audigy LS. The system was, all in all,
pretty stable.
When I got me the game, I noticed it ran fine, without crashing, but with a
tendency top slow down considerably when many units were on screen. So I
decided the time had come to upgrade...
I got me a new CPU & mobo, and more memory - an AMD Athlon 64 3000+, an MSI
K8M Neo-V, and an additional 1Gb or RAM, respectively.
While in Windows everything seems to run just fine, when playing the game,
sooner or later the system locks up - the image & mouse cursor freeze up,
after a while the sound starts faltering as well, and then the screen goes
black entirely, as if the monitor goes into standby mode. There's no way to
return to Windows when this happens, so a cold reset (or turning the power
off) is the only way out.
When trying to determine what could be wrong, I replaced the Radeon with my
old videocard, an nVidia GeForce 4 card. The game once again proved
perfectly stable.
Thinking my Radeon had gone faulty, I had it replaced by Creative. However,
with the replacement card I got the same thing happening again!
Could it be that the Radeon & the new mobo don't work well together? Could
it be the power supply is failing suddenly? The PS (An Enermax ATx 12V V1.2,
460W) should be powerful enough to handle things.
I'm using the latest Catalyst (5.2) drivers, and last night I decided to
flash the mobo's BIOS (you never know, right?), as well as updated the VIA
Hyperion drivers through MSI Live update... I briefly tried the game after
that, and it didn't crash while I played, but that may just be coincidence
(I've had it crash after like 3 hours of playing at one point).
So I was wondering if anyone has any ideas, or suggestions. I would be very
grateful...

Oops - I didn't know the post would be THAT big! :-/
Oh, before anyone asks, I have been checking with EA Games' user forum, and
it seems I'm not the only one experiencing similar "issues". Still, not a
clue what the cause is...

Sounds like your chipset might be the culprit if the system just freezes.
Either that or what youve already suspected - the videocard. But getting
back to the chipset - I'm unfamiliar with that mobo but does it have a fan
on the chipset or passive cooling? If no fan, play your game until the
freeze happens again then open your case and put your thumb on the chipset.
If its hot enough to have to pull away, theres the problem. Hows your case
cooling? I think its standard to have 1 or 2 front-mounted case fans. Try
also leaving the side of your case open perhaps even with a room fan blowing
in there and check out your game again.
One other thing - does this happen with ALL graphic-intensive games or just
LOTR?
