Quandry about Half-life 2 download

I got a coupon from AMD about a month ago which was part of a promotion
deal for buying an AMD 64 3500+. The trouble is, I have dialup and could
download Half-Life 2 but it would take along time, probably days if not
weeks. Can I get the disks from Steam or AMD if I send in proof of
purchase etc?

I went to the AMD site and while it mentions the promotion it doesn't
say anything about how to get the disks if I cannot download it. I
noticed that if you bought an ATI video card you could do this. Am I not
seeing something?

Suggestions??

Well.. I figure the download via a 56K, if we count it at 3 Gig's including
all the extras, updates, etc... 6.9 days if you pull a steady stream of
5kb/s... hee hee. Have fun!

My advice- upgrade to high speed DSL or cable. You won't be able to enjoy
the multiplayer (Counter Strike Source OR HL2 DM) without a high speed
connection anyway.

Yes I went there but I do not have an ATI card. I have an Nvidia Leadtek
Winfast 6600GT PCIe. I realize that this could be done with an ATI offer
but this is different!

Do you know anyone with a copy of the retail version? Someone with greater
knowledge than mine will correct me, but I believe you could install it from a
friend's disc, set up your own Steam account using the details from the coupon,
and take it from there (maybe you have to do that the other way around). After
the game is unlocked *and patched*, you no longer need the disc in to play.
Your Steam account probably negates the original requirement for the disc to be
in anyway.

McG: didn't you do it this way?

I have broadband, and once Bench (mainly!) got me over my Steam-phobia I
preinstalled the games via the net. I already had HL1 and Opposing
Force, so using my HL1 key unlocked a bunch of stuff. When the game was
released, I bought the CE DVD version, used THAT key to unlock and
validate HL2.

What this guy needs is the media. The disk. I'm guessing he has a key
code from the AMD offer. OR the AMD offer download could be pre-coded
with a key embedded. If they gave him a key code, then I would think
any HL2 media would be fine. But if it's the second, only the download
from that site will work.
I don't know what they actually DO, I'm guessing is all. I've learned
there are a few ways Steam has to do this, and the OP didn't mention any
keycode with the offer.
The last way mentioned is an offshoot idea based on OEM software, I
don't know if Valve uses this method or not, but it's a possiblity.
On second thought, what this guy needs is a friend with broadband and a
DVD writer. He could DL the package from the site, burn the disk, take
it home and install it on his system, dial up, validate, update (If
necessary) and away he goes.

IF AMD gives you a "keycode", then yes, that could be done. The media
is the media, just like Windows Enterprise. One disk can install to
every one of 3,000 systems but each one has a license (Corporate). The
important detail is, do you have a keycode?

*BINGO!* Ok, all ya need is to first, create a Steam account. If you
have it already set up it just seems easier. DO write your user name
and password down so you don't lose it. Once your game is installed and
validated, that keycode is then useless. Your Steam account info
though, guard with your life :)
Then, borrow ANYones Half-Life 2 disk(s). Install the game, it will
want to create or go to your Steam account. Let it go to it, log in.
Let Steam validate and update your game. This will likely take some
time. For updating. There will be some Steam settings to pay
attention to. Like the Account tabs checkbox at the bottom, "Don't save
account information on this computer" *MUST* be UNchecked in order to
play the game in Offline mode. With dialup, you will likely want this
for sure. If your internet connection is disabled, Steam will offer to
start in Offline mode. This means no impromptu updating. Some of the
updates can be large-ish. Ask Paul about that stuff :)
Hope you get it running soon!
McG.

I would have high speed in a heartbeat. I am in a rural area where there
is no cable and no ISDN capability so it is not a matter of choice.

If you know someone who has broadband and you have a nic in your pc you
could ask them to hook up for the download.

I'm sorry but that's not true. I still enjoy CS:S with my 26.4K
connection, mostly because I can get 200-250ms ping to my friends
server. That works for me.
Hell I get 400-500 ping on my transatlantic pings for the AGHL bashes
which is still enough to kick some ass. (Minus the Skrutts and now the
Sabaki bastages) :)
