9800 in Epox 8KHA+

I'm trying to put a AIW 9800 Pro in a computer with an Epox 8KHA+. It
currently runs fine with a 9700 Pro. When I put the 9800 in, the power
supply trips out immediately on pushing the ON button. I have an Antec
TruePower 430. I tried a Vantec 420, same. I actually have TWO computers
with 8KHA+ boards, same in both, so we're up to three power supplies,
all good ones. Yes, the power connector is connected. It can't be
anything in Windows, it doesn't get close to that point.

I realize the board is only AGP 4X, but the 9800 should work.

The 9800 works in another computer, so it's not the 9800. It won't work
in two 8KHA+ computers!!

Is there something about this board and the 9800 that won't work? Is
there some BIOS setting I'm missing. OH, I have the last and latest BIOS
from Epox site.

Mystified!!

Voltage on the line pooped out ? Does the AIW take a larger voltage then the
9700 ?

Unknown. I can't find anything that tells me what voltage either takes.
I can't really imagine the VOLTAGE requirements would be different, but
perhaps. Like I said, I tried three power supplies, all with big
amperage on 3.3, 5, and 12 volts, both pooped out instantly on press of
start button, and in two different 8KHA+ board computers. It pooped so
fast no fans even got to spin half a revolution!

I really don't get it. Anyone?

No apparent leaking, swollen, bulging or otherwise flaky caps. I haven't
removed the board from the box to inspect with a magnifying glass, but
all looks well from 10" away peering with flashlight!! And I tried it in
TWO 8KHA+ machines, both working well otherwise. One with the
aforementioned 9700, the other with AIW 7500.

I'm going to take the board out to replace the 1900+ with an MP 2800+
soon, so I'll take a very close look at the caps then.

Surely a mystery to li'l ol' me!!

Any other sugs?

Take the card back and exchange it for another one, maybe? I have an
8KHA+ with a 9800 Pro (not AIW), and it works fine with a 400 W PSU. So,
your card may be faulty.

Of course I meant amps... sorry.

Are the board chip drivers up to date ?
I had an epox some about 2 years ago with Via chipset that never ran an AIW 32mb
properly. Had to set the bios options for the card at the lowest and never got
to AGP 2x.

Have tried two different AIW 9800, both known good in other computers,
in two different 8KHA+ motherboard computers, none works. These are aged
cards, too, so no taking them back!!

Trust me on one thing, it's a long way from chipset drivers!! It trips
out the power supply instantly upon pressing the button. It never gets
thru post let alone to Windows and any chipset drive issue. This with
TWO AIW 9800 Pros and TWO 8KHA+ motherboard computers and three high
zoot power supplies.

It's all surely pointing to some incompatibility, but why?

Went to search and learned that the board has diagnostic leds . Don't they tell
you where in the boot up the failure occurs?

Hmmm.....never looked at led's!! I didn't think it even got THAT far, it
seemed to almost SHORT and trip the power supply instantly, but I didn't
look, so here goes. I have one of the 8KHA+ computers running, sent one
to motherboardrepair.com for caps.

Put the AIW 9800 in, it boots without a hitch!! WTF??! For two weeks I
couldn't get this to boot in either of two boards, 3 power supplies,
anything, trying many times, switching everything I could think of for
test purposes. You gotta love these computers.

Now to see if it'll boot in the one that's coming back from getting new
caps, that's the one I really want it in!!

You know, I ALMOST suspect the AIW 9800's external power connector or
the adapter from Molex to 4 pin floppy connector. Today it seemed to
come off hard, so I was yanking on it the way you almost HAVE to with
those goofy floppy type connectors and it worked after that. Inspecting
the connector and solder joints on the board with magnification,
everything seems OK.

I don't know!! I'll report back once more if, or NOT, it works with the
other 8KHA+. I WILL be wiggling that connector around and being sure
it's hooked directly to a PS floppy type connector, no adapters in the
line!
