I just purchased a new computer with XP Professional SP2. When I go to the
Windows Security Center (start/control panel/Window Security Center) I get
the following message under Security Essentials:

"The Security Center is currently unavailable because the 'Security Center'
service has not been started or was stopped. Please close this window,
restart the computer (or start the Security Center service) and the open the
Security Center again."

I have my Windows Firewall is ON along with Norton anti-virus and the Norton
firewall.

Can anyone help me?

You must turn off one your firewalls OFF PERMANENTLY. If you have Norton
Internet Security 2005 --- keep that one on and turn off the Microsoft one.
Any two firewalls on at the same time with do big damage -- big time.

Thanks for your reply. Do you think this is the cause of my message saying
"the 'Security Center' service has not been started or was stopped.-"

Try this...

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | Click OK |
Scroll down to and double click Security Center service |
Set it to Automatic | Click the Start button | When Security Center service
has started, close Services

Thank you both for your suggestions. I have turned off the duplicate firewall
and followed Wesley's suggestions and the problem is fixed. Thanks again for
your help!!
