"Stuck in the beginning of the game"

I am stuck in the beginning ot the game Half-life2. I am in a outdoor space
that is filled with water. Before I ended up here I passed a room filled
with barnacles. According to a walkthrough guide I should jump across the
platforms in a horseshoe pattern and enter the next tube.

My problem is that I cannot reach the platforms in the first place. I have
reached a small platform in the middle of the outdoor space by climbing a
stepladder, but cannot jump to the next platform which is too far away. So
instead I find myself immersed in the water with the platforms out of reach.
What should I do?

I am not exactly sure where you are, but I think it is the area where Combine
troops first start dropping flaming barrels into the water. One of the
platforms slopes down into the water. That's your route out. From there you
run and jump in the horseshoe pattern, to get into a pipe (which is behind and
to the left of you as you head up the ramp).

Hope I got that right, I did it quite a while ago.

It's a long way before the boat, btw.

Keep swimming to where the water meets a concrete wall with two
holes in it. You will see that the grate blocking the hole on the right is
broken so you can get through if you're high enough. Here it is
possible to get up on the wooden planks on your left and run the
horseshoe pattern around to where you can jump through the
broken grate.
