I installed 5.6 yesterday and I also installed GTA:SA.
The problem is that it played fine until today but now I get a VPU
recover error every few minutes.
Could this be a heat issue or is it just the new Cats?
My system is built on a Gigabyte GA-8I875Ultra
Northwood 2.8 + Zalman 7000Alcu
2x512MB DDR400 Viking 2.5
Radeon 9700Pro + ATI Silencer 1
Seagate 7200.7 80GB SATA
3x80mm case fans @7V
btw. the CPU temperature never goes more than 45-47C high under full
load and idles around 30C.
For GTA:SA I use 1152x864x32, Very high quality FX, 2AA(in-game), 8xAF,
Max draw distance,frame limiter off.

Perhaps it's some kind of software conflict in your system. I'm running
Catalyst 5.6 without any problems, I have played hours of GTA:SA today and
yesterday. Although there's a difference in specs, I'm running on an ATi
Radeon X800 Pro with an Athlon 64 3200+.
Try turning off VPU Recover to see if you get a specific error so you know
where to look for the cause.
I don't think it's overheating, otherwise you'd have seen problems in any
3D-heavy programs.

I didn't think it was an overheating issue either beacuse I didn't get
these kinds of errors(first SA freezes then after cca 5-10sec VPU rec
jumps in and says that it restarted the GPU,and them SA plays along fine
until the next time).
I played a lot of 3D-heavy games all on high-max settings and I never
got these issues.
btw.would my CPU(either default 2.8 or OCed 2.8@3.2) be a bottleneck for
a X800XL or a newer mid-end R520 GPU?

every time when I play Joint Operations when ever I press the M key form map
/ from my keyboard the game freeze & crash back to desktop with VPU
recovery, anyway catalyst 5.4 don't have any of these problem before, now
I'm forced to switch back to v5.4. Damn what's wrong with ATI driver

After turning off Fast write I encountered the error only once in one hour.
These things don't happen with DNA drivers so I'll just wait until he
upgrades them and then I'll download.

Looks like the Catalyst 5.6 just like a beta driver! You're right better
stick with the DNA driver.

I was having a simliar problem and found an error log report from
ati2mag saying ’Invalid Pixel format". After messing around with
various graphics settings and still getting the error.
I had a look over my ati settings from the taskbar and found that
there is a direct x option to use an alternate pixel center.
(1. on Radeon9600 series > 3D Settings > Direct3D > Alternate Pixel
Center)
I have being playing the game for hours now and still no system hangs.
